Shoot better from my knees
« on: January 19, 2022, 07:25:19 PM »
Don't know why I shoot better from my knees, but results don't lie.  Maybe target or critter think I'm praying.

Me too, and I really see improvement when I’m sitting on a stool or chair! Of course my buddies might tell you there’s nowhere to go but up.  :biglaugh:

Knees or sitting are more stable positions than standing  Makes perfect sense. :readit:

Your gonna need some knee pads since thats how you shoot best.Sounds good for ground pounders.Killed most my animals from one knee or both knees.

Gives new meaning to "take a knee".  One knee works as well as both.  May need to KUIU padded knee pants, or a piece of foam to put down.

Shooting good from your knees should come in handy on your upcoming javi hunt!

Good luck down south!!!

I'm pretty sure that Fred Asbell once said he was much more accurate from both knees, as opposed to one knee.  I've tried both, and I think I prefer both on the ground.
You can buy work pants that carpet installers use, that are knee pad friendly.  They're pretty rugged, and don't cost the same as a truck payment.

Your body weight is more distributed making a more solid position. Sitting same-same. Now if you could shoot your bow from the prone position you would improve even more. Just a tidbit I had beaten (literally) into my head in Marine Boot Camp.

I prefer both down, but in a hurry front knee down works.

Me too.  I seem to shoot better with both knees on the ground.  Problem is getting back up again, just not as young as I think I am.

Have been quite effective both in the field and at 3D resting on the back of my heels.

For me atleast I think I shoot better from a kneeling position due to my target now being at eye level.
Less chance I'm going to drop my bow arm while standing and looking down at my target.  Instead of bending at the waist .
Seems most stuff we shoot is at hip level or lower anyway ah?

That has been my thought as well.  Just bought a part of military surplus knee pads to make it more effortless.

While I prefer shooting from both knees, it's not always possible for me.  Thirty years ago, a horse I was trying to rope took exception, and kicked me in my right kneecap, shattering it all over the place.  That smarted a bit.  The surgeon did an outstanding job, as I've only started having mild problems with it in the last few years.  But, I could never put much weight on it directly, due to whatever he used to re-attach things.  I can feel these lumps under the skin, and they tend to be touchy.  A pad usually makes it tolerable, however.

I knew a fellow that could only shoot from his knees when shooting at 3d events. If he stood up he missed. It became an automatic habit for him. People thought he was cheating because he did not toe the stake, he did not turn in his score card. He quit hunting from tree stands and went to knee pads and a low foam covered saddle for deer hunting, a short Nifty Seat. I have shot game from my knees, but i cannot stay in that position for very long.

Don't think you have to "toe" the stake just have part of your body touching it.  Shot a shoot once that had a 4" diameter tree trunk cut of at about 4 feet and the stake driven in the top.  Only way to shoot was to have your elbow make contact at full draw.  Neat!!!

Another advantage of shooting from the knees is at close range you don't look like a human.  And it is easier to get behind brush.
