Shelf material placement

When putting on a shelf material, in this case calf hair, should the side plate and the rest come together at the inside angle of the shelf, or should you leave a bit of a gap? Hopefully that made sense.

I like a gap,need all the help I can get.Just makes me feel like I get more clearance. Theres guys with lots more experience than me that use one piece folded in the corner.

I used to fold them and now I have a gap...makes for better, cleaner release from the riser area..
