Guess I neither like or dislike the “like”. Just signed on to TG last month after lurking for way too long and one reason I did was the discussion about lack of, or diminished meaningful discussion here. I’d sure like to see TG flourish with lots of interesting discussion. I hope the “like” button doesn’t replace good discussion.

I think you can "like" a thread and still add comment, as needed.

My only concern is if someone hits the "like" button does it bring the thread up to the top as it's a hot topic? Otherwise If I give a "thumbs up glad you posted does bring it to the top of the page. IF it doesn't bring the post up front your forum looks like it's not being used as much as it is. IDK

I'm not on social media other than a few archery forums. I'm not technologically challenged (unless you ask my 15 year old son) and I like the "LIKE" button, no pun intended.

I enjoy coming here and reading the input of other members. I like to learn from them, read their stories, see the pictures etc. The "LIKE" button gives me the opportunity of acknowledging their contribution without me making a long winded, rambling post like this one 

Nothing is better than sharing yer thoughts with the gang concerning a certain topic or post, but sometimes a "Like" button hit is easier/better than making yet another "Me too." or "I agree" agreement post.  The "Like" button is just what it is, and no one needs to use it, that's for sure.
 
So yep, the "Like" button is essentially a way of "liking" and/or "supporting" a post without the need to get redundantly verbose.  No more or less.  Posts with lotsa "Likes" may also add a measure of "weight" to those posts and be used as an indicator of a product or service or just a plain ol' opinion that may be of help to others.

 "Like" buttons have always impressed me as a lazy detached way to feign involvement. One step up from lurking. Next thing you know, the well "liked" members will be relabeled from "Trad Bowhunter" to "Influencer". Considering the general decline in ability to communicate succinctly on internet forums, encouraging brevity will eventually lead to more apathy.

I don't really have a great deal to add that hasn't been expressed in some ways by others. The 'like' button is a bit contemporary; something that belongs in the current time....but just a little odd on a media platform that promotes an old way of things.

The irony that I am saying this on a digital platform doesn't escape me; but it just seems to be a development that should be left to a more youthful platform.

What's funny is those complaining about something new on here, that they do not need to use and want to keep things more traditional, are all accessing this forum with a computer or a high tech cell phone?

I think the like button would be fine, except for the fact that the likes are tallied. The only reason to count the number of likes is for comparison, at which point it becomes a popularity contest. Popularity contests enshrine the winners and alienate the losers. The question is, do we need to know who is the most liked contributor?
If thats really important, just look to see who's threads have the most views. It won't tell you if they are liked or loathed, but you will know who garners the most interest. Personally, I value a persons thoughtful contribution, over their clicking an approval button.

There are times though where I appreciate someone elses response--topic--addition to the conversation, thus a "like".
