Matt,checkering files are for metal.Wood checkering uses different types of cutters.As a beginner,you don't want to start checkering too fine.About 16-18 lines per inch would be right.You can find those tools where gunsmithing supplies are sold.I would get a basic book on checkering and look up some videos.From there,buy a few basic tools and practice on some spare,hardwood.Laminated woods aren't the best for checkering but I have seen it done.Some tropical hardwoods will accept very fine checkering.Again,for a beginner,16- 18 lines per inch would be a good starting point.
