Aluminum??

Years ago now we were testing a spine tester made by one of our club members. Now Kevin is one of those rocket scientist guys so we trust his machine. We also found inconsistencies in the carbons we were using. Only the Easton’s had any were near what is called consistent. That’s when we learned about high and low spine sides on the carbons as well.

The higher end Victory VForce shafts were the best ones i've tested, but even the +/- .006 were much more consistent in spine than a lot of other brands.  For economy shafts, i found the Beaman Hunters could be matched up fairly close.

I don't think i ever tested the Easton shafts.... What brand Easton shaft are you referring to?

Kirkll, I can’t remember as this happened about 15 years ago. Kevin,Oak Creek Archery, was having us try his spine tester. I think I was using either Gold Tips or CE Heritage.

The high end Gold tip Trad shafts were not bad, and the Heritage were not too bad to match up either. I've used both of those. I actually really like Heritage shafts. Very durable. I had most my spine issues with the gold tip Blems, and other low end economy shafts. Sometimes ya get what you pay for.     Kirk

Does anyone know the spine of 2314?  I have 2219 at 93.5# and 2315 at  92.1#.

The spine of the 2314 is listed as 80.

Went to aluminums about 4 years ago. I love wood but they just don't last. Most of my bows are 40# and I like 2013 cut at 29" with 125 on the tip. I draw 27". These arrow fly for me in 35 to 47#.

Got home with my box full of 2314 arrows and shafts, going to see about putting Uni-nock bushings in them with Easton S nocks.  All it cost me was a tank of gas and 6 1/2 hours of driving.  Should be great for 3-D.

I discovered about 4 dozen 2020 XX75s, including a dozen autumn orange hidden in my junk a while back. I cut one an inch longer than I normally shoot. 200 gr up front. Bare shaft=perfect flight from 50# recurve. I'm down to about a half dozen carbons for hunting. I'll be going back to the aluminums soon.

I don't have a problem tuning the carbon's but did have to try some different manufactures until I was satisfied.  That said the only reason I shoot carbon is the durability factor.  I've shot my best scores with aluminum, but that might be age also:( 

I didn't go the 1/4" route on either shaft though.

I made the switch from aluminum a very long time ago.. Beer is so much better from bottles! Occasionally I will chose aluminum but that is just because bottle caps can come loose inside a cooler..    Trust me when I say.. in my day, my use of aluminum cans may have caused an increase in the price of aluminum arrows.

I have never had an issue tuning a carbon.. cut to center or past center.. One must keep an open mind and try different things. If you don't want to make something work, it is likely it will never work! and vice versa. If you are unwilling to be flexible in your tune, I can see why carbon would be difficult for you.

Think about this.. for wood shafts, there is available spines in increments for every  5 lbs. For aluminum, there is likely more.. although many are disappearing. For carbon, there is typically not more than 4 available spines.. sometimes 6. With this (6 spines) and an open game plan, you can find something to work from 20lbs to 70lbs..

These 2314 will be 3-D fodder.  Got the 2314 rocking at 29 1/2" with a 200 grain screw-in tip.  If I move up to 5" fletch that will put me at 600 grains total weight from a 65#+ recurve.  If I hunt with aluminum it is 2219.(658 grs)  Otherwise tapered wood shafts at 730-800 grains rule.
