100 year old fence post
« on: May 04, 2022, 10:49:26 AM »
A few years ago a guy at the Classic gifted me a 100 year old fence osage fence post. When I tried to reduce it with a draw knife I realized just how hard this wood had become. I tried to deal with it a few times over the next couple of years but finally decided to see if I could find some one that could make something out of this interesting stave.
Will Harris, a friend and member of Twin Oak Bowhunters and a successful snakey bow builder was my candidate. I asked Will if he would like to take on the challenge and he was pleased to do so. I did mention to Will at the time that if he was successful I'd be happy for him to give it to me.
Three years later and my first time back to Twin Oaks and the Classic Will presented me with this incredible snakey bow. During the tillering process with it being drawn to about 22" the bottom limb gave way. You can imaging the disappointment Will felt then he remembered a snakey billet he had stored in his attic.
After splicing the billet to the upper limb and retillering this was the final result...

Will wanted to take a pic of me shooting it but when I did he heard a "tick" so I unbraced it and we found where the crack under the wrap had lengthened. Will said it would probably settle in but I'd rather keep it whole and admire it for it's beauty. That's the thing about these snakey bows, you just never know.  :dunno:
My wife suggested I hang it over the doorway to the sunroom (  :o ) so I'll work on doing that. Sorry I didn't think to show it to you. I was so excited about getting it I was besides myself.

Yeah, under the red wrap. Those snakey bows sometimes separate (like a check) in the snakes. Sometimes they go just so far and stop but other times they BLOW!  :o  That's what I don't want.  :bigsmyl:
Will has it all on TicToc and he showed it to me.

Won't Sinew hold it together with CA glue in the crack?
Would sinew be better than string serving wrap?

He has made a good many Snakey bows, when you look at them up close they are really cool

I would have used sinew. I think he put super glue in the initial crack but until they settle in the cracks continue to happen in the curves until the strains settle out. The two snakey bows hanging on the rack at Twin Oaks were sisters from about 10 that Shannon Walker cut years ago. Those two were the only ones to survive.

Here is her place of honor, over the door between the sunroom and living room. My wife suggested it and I agreed with her.

Had to dredge this thread up.

Yeah it's a nice bow, but that handle wrap and lacing is exceptional
Really nice work. Did you do that, Pat B?
