And just like that, I'm hunting with wood arrows again!
« on: May 13, 2022, 09:56:03 AM »
So I recently receive my new bow that I posted about in the "New Bows for 2022" thread.   Extremely happy with new bow and I'm loving it to say the least.  The string serving is a little thicker than what I've been using many years past and all the carbon arrows I've been using for a long time now,  have nocks that just fit too tight for me and instead of sanding them out with a nock tuning tool,  I ordered some new nocks (along with some more shafts  :knothead:) and they should be showing up soon ........BUT.....I had to shoot this bow and get to some tuning with it so I start looking through all my arrows and I unbox some Surewood doug fir arrows with banana fletch on there that have been sitting in a box unused but a couple shots maybe,  for the better of 10 years.  They have a Bohning glue on nock and turns out that nock fits just dandy AND it turns out them arras fly like darts with just a tad bit of tuning.  So I'm shootin' and shootin' and shootin' some more and I decided heck .......  Deltas are going on some of these and they are coming after turkeys Saturday morning.   The Deltas are flying like the field points.   I'm really liking the woodies!!!!
All I can say is this,  if there's anyone out there that has been shooting aluminum and carbon and has never tried a wood arrow,  you need to give it a shot......you owe it to yourself ...... because there's something about it that is very hard to explain.  I'll keep it in simple terms and just describe it as WAY COOL!!! Especially when they are spined correctly, super straight and weight matched    So just like that,  I'm taking wood arrows into the woods hunting come tomorrow morning,  something I haven't done in what seems like a very long time  :campfire:

Yep.  Look good, too.

Re the less than perfect fit with your carbons.  Easier and cheaper to reserve the string rather than buy new nocks.  Of course, if you do that now, your woodies won't fit.  :goldtooth:

Just a thought....

Over the years, folks have tried other shafting.
Fiberglass and aluminium, for straightness.
Grafflex.... Who remembers THAT one??? LOL
Carbon, for their sheer durability!!

IMHO.... There is no sweeter smell, than a broken cedar shaft!!!  :archer2:

Cool deal.  I may have to hunt with my new woods as good as they shoot as well.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

And just like that I'm hunting with carbons :goldtooth:
I've gone back n forth with my love of POC.
I shoot carbons from my hill LB but I uncovered some POC arrows in my stash and decided to re try 'em.
Well all was good till I lost a glue on point, that was half way thru my course and on the second to last target I skipped a woodie off the bag target and after I found all 3 peices of my arrow I put what was left of my wood arrows back in the stash and suddenly remembered why I switched to carbons.
 Good luck with the woodies.

I started out with woodies primarily because I didn't really know much about other arrow materials. Eventually, I tried fiberglass and aluminum arrows, settling on aluminum as my first choice. As time went by, I got my first Hill style bow, and as so many others, I felt like I must try wood again. I haven't looked back! I have one R/D longbow that I still shoot aluminum arrows from. I never had much success fiddling with carbon arrows. I always complain that carbon is just difficult to tune, but all my friends tell me my problem comes from not knowing what I'm doing. They probably are right. Anyway, I won't be using anything other than wood. It is just plain old fun.

Wood arrows really rock.  I occasionally throw Easton arrows at hogs, 2219 or 2315.  But footed woodies are up front most of the time.

Likewise I picked up a bow in a trade and from all the arrows I have put through it, the POC shafts seems to fly the best. Wood Power !!!

Me too. Hundreds of dollars worth of carbons on my shelves but I am back to wood. I just got a dozen from Lost Nation Larry. And have a dozen in the works on my own bench. All tapered cedar. 80-85 with 5 1/2" feathers.

Wood only for me as I enjoy making them and using them. When I shot recurves I did really like carbons but with ASL style longbows I prefer woodies for sure

I enjoy making Woodies as well.  Will probably next loose make Easton arrows for target, and the occasions hog, but Woodies will be up front when I'm hunting deer, etc...  Have a few dozen Aerodynamic carbons I bring out just to play with on the range.  Might even take these after a big gnarly boar will massive FOC.  Hate to break a Woodie on a pig.

Yep, only wood for me also.  Just really like them.  I enjoy making them,. even making my on shafts.  The satisfaction I get from making as much of my own equiptment is one of the reasons archery has always been such a enjoyment.
