High wrist bow...?
« on: May 06, 2008, 02:42:00 AM »
I have found that I shoot best with a high wrist but all of my bows are low wrist or medium wrist. I have seen some folks use some type of wrapping to adapt and make their bows a high wrist grip and I was wondering what a fella would use to make this?
Also, can this be done with both recurves and longbows or is it stricktly a recurve thing?

Right, there's only one solution... You need to order several brand-new custom bows that have a high-wrist grip... But you'd better get some sort of armour suit first if you're married.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

I know one guy who used auto body compound (bondo) to build up the grip on his riser. He then just sanded it down into the shape he wanted. If it was me I would put some plastic wrap on the handle so that I could take the bondo off if needed. Once you get it to the shape you want then you can fix it in place with tape or tubing or whatever you want.

Just an idea.

I would file an insurance claim citing repetitive motion induced pain caused by using a low wrist position bow. Tell them in lieu of a medical financial settlement you would be more than happy to opt out for a couple of new bows of your choice.

I have used thick leather and a leather baseball bat wrap to build up a grip. I have found after 12 years that I shoot a medium-high  that is beefy the best. Any bow with a 5.75-6.5" throat makes me a better shot. Shawn

I've used silicone sealer squeezed between the saddle of the riser & my hand to build it up & form fit it to my hand as a temporary thing.

Wrap the saddle with saran wrap first, slap some sealer on it, then put saran wrap on your hand, spray it with a releasing agent, (I used "pam" cooking spray) then hold the bow normally to form it to yer hand.
If you have to fill in a lot of space, better to do it a few stages letting the sealer dry inbetween.

Slowly remove the top layer of saran wrap (next to yer hand) & let dry. The sealer won't cure without air.

Once dry, I temporarily wrap it again with saran wrap to hold in place while I shoot the bow some to see how it feels etc.

If I decide it's worth the effort to have it permanent, I will carve some wood to match my silicone form & glue it on. If not, but still want the high grip, I'll glue on lifts of leather with contact cement after first applying paste wax to the bow wood so it is easily removed at a later date.

The things ya think of during a no-hunting time!!!

Thanks for the advice guys. I will try and modify my old Bear Grizzly and when I can afford to get a new bow I will be looking at something like the Great Plains SR Swift. It looks like it has a high wrist grip. Since I went back to using the high wrist grip a week or so ago I am amazed at how my accuracy has improved.  :)

If you are not squeemish, the Bondo route works well.  Build it up in steps, not all at once.  My longbow has a bondo handle and I love it.

2-BIG,

Those Great Plains SR Swifts has one of the best, if not the very best, grip going. They fit your hand like a glove.
