Montana Mountain Goat tag!
« on: June 06, 2022, 02:41:55 PM »
Finally drew my goat tag after 19 years of trying. Will be in unit 323 just north of Yellowstone park. My good buddy also drew the tag! Both only planning on hunting with the longbow.  Will keep y’all up to date as the hunt unfolds. First scouting trip in July.

Congratulations!  I've been applying for goat since 1979 and haven't drawn one yet. I've been applying for a sheep tag since 1978 and haven't drawn one of those either.
If I'd known that I would live this long I'd have taken better care of myself.

Hunt of a lifetime there. Better hit the gym hard and often.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

Congratulation!!  I have been lucky  enough to hunt goats twice in Colorado.
They are a great animal to hunt with a bow in some of the most awesome country, hunt of a lifetime for sure!!

Best of luck, it can be a tough unit to fill a tag. Getting to where the goats are is a signifigant journey in itself.

The genetics are there, if you find the correct areas there will be a couple of good billy’s.  That said, you need to you get in far and high enough. I know of two goats that have been taken with bows a few taken with compounds from the unit.  Two of them were pushing the 10” mark

Being from Montana, you should know without being told, the unit is thick with grizzly’s.

If at all possible fly over the unit for a couple/three hours early summer then again just before the season, it could save you weeks of hiking, riding, and glassing.

If you have horses great, if not get one, or get in good shape.  Get in really good shape regardless.  I have played Sherpa (nice way of saying pack mule) twice, placing different goat hunters on stalk-able Billy’s in unit 329, just north of 323.  Each time, immediately after the hike in, we had stalk-able goats and the hunter was too tired to make the stalk before the Billy’s meandered away a couple of hours later.  One of them was a solid 10” Billy in a perfect position to stalk.  That hunter spent the next week hunting and didn’t see another Billy.  He ended up taking a nanny with his longbow, still a great feat.  Had he of been in shape, he had a good, doable, stalk, to get longbow close to a remarkable goat.

The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Thanks everybody! Been packing bear bait all spring which sure helps . Being a electrician puts me up and down ladders 50 times a day.  I will start doing some long hikes to beat up the feet a little. The country is decent as far as goat country goes. Trying to decide on a bow arrow setup now.

Congrats on the draw, Mt Goats are awesome. I've eaten a few tags many years ago and helped a buddy of mine scout and pack out a nice Billy in Washington near Crystal Mountain. Good luck and be safe !!
