Jet 2244 plus drum sander

I picked up a Jet 2244 Plus drum Sander with the cabinet stand that has not hardly been used.

Anyone got one of these and how do you like it?

I've heard a lot of folks that have the 16/32 that love them. I haven't had one but would sure snag one if the price was right...

Prolly be great for stuff that wide.
Never used an open end sander but hear they flex some. Might not be a big deal for cabinet stuff but for lamps I prefer a bearing on each end of the drum. And they say a wide belt is better than drum but can't afford that.

He said it has only had about 20 board feet ran through it and it looks new. New one with the cabinet is 2700. I got it for 1100.

I will also use it for cabinet making as well.

Seems like Kirk made a bracket on the open end to lock it and prevent any play.  Maybe he will check in...

I thought those open end sanders had an adjustment to keep the drum parallel to the table?

I had a Grizzly widebelt that was open end, it had an adjustment but also a cast iron frame so never needed to adjust and it stayed pretty equal side to side.

I used it today to sand a riser after gluing it together and to rough in some lams.

Man! Made it so easy! Should have done this a long time ago. Really spread up the process  a lot.

I have the small Grizzly. It comes with a fixture to lock the open end, but I don’t use it. The sander’s frame is heavy cast iron and if it flexes at all, I can’t tell.
I use it for lams, but I also build furniture, so I like that it can take larger pieces.

Still have a Jet 16x33 and have hundreds of lams run through it- Like crooked said it flexes so I constantly have to adjust it to make sure my lams are uniform. Just got a grizzly baby drum thats closed ended but haven`t set it up yet-

I have the little Jet 10-20 drum sander.  No problem with flex after i added a support strap on the open end.  Has worked great for me.  I would probably upgrade to the 16 32 if this ones craters.

  Did you check the thickness from side to side??

No, basically used it to hog the la.s down to size for my thickness sander. Got to change the drum paper tonight.  I loaded it up on some Bloodwood from a riser when I got in a hurry.
That stuff is oily and turns to rock hard deposits if you rush it.

I think a new sand paper does better for oily woods.
I use new sand paper to grind Bocote and it does a lot better.

I have a 16 x32 I have had for about 25 years and it gets used about every day, with a little practice you can get very accurate with it I can get my lams to a thousandth of an inch . You cant adjust the drum to make it even I've tried many times but it just wont get exact but it does get close just keep flipping the lams .

I would strongly recommend building a side mount bracket you can tighten down to keep it from flexing. both my 10/20 and the 16/32 i've had for about 8-9 years have /had the lock down bracket. I just used a couple pieces of flat metal to make mine and tapped one for a knob to tighten it.

BTW..... i think you can buy one of these at Grizzly tools and adapt it to yours rather than fabricate one.
