Anyone have Newfoundland Moose hunting stories to share?
« on: August 08, 2022, 04:19:54 PM »
Moose with my bow has always been my dream hunt and I always thought Newfoundland would be the place I'd want to go. At this point in my life, Moose hunting will most likely remain a "dream hunt", but if any of you have hunted Moose in Newfoundland, I'd love to hear the stories and see the photos!

Never hunted moose in NFld but hunt caribou there. I saw some moose but didn't get up close to any, I've shot moose in BC and Ont. Both my buddy and I got our caribou on our trip, getting 9 boxes of meat, 2 capes and 2 set of antlers back on the airlines was an adventure but they all got back in good shape with us after changing planes 3 times.

Four of us hunted there in 2010, we saw many moose plus a number of nice caribou, I was able to take a cow moose with my black widow longbow, 51@28, shot was about 35 yards, recovery 50 yards. Another in the group took a nice bull with his black widow recurve. Was something I always wanted to do and fortunately was able to.

One of my dream hunts as well.  I put in every year for a moose license but so far no luck.  I’d like to hear some good moose hunting stories.

I hope you get to do it Mike.  Supposed to be highest moose densities in North America?  I have a friend who went with longbow. His mileage indeed varied from what one would expect. He saw only one and it was behind the lodge.   Apparently they had awful weather.

Grizzly was first on my dream hunt list when I was still a teenager. In fact, when I jumped out of a plane (19 years old), my only thought was that, "I'll never get a grizzly now."   Oviously that jump went fine, but I scratched the Griz off my list a few decades later when those hunts exceeded 10K.

Sheep got scratched from my list for the same reason.

A long-planned moose hunt in Alberta was set-up for this September.  Then I discovered having short legs doesn't protect one from blown hip joints.  In fact, going for cortisone this morning getting ready for right hip replacement this fall.  I can't even walk to the front door of Walmart without pain.  They say I'll be better than new after recovery from the surgery, so we'll see what the future holds.

Like way too many folks, I waited too long for an awful lot of things.

Bowild-good luck with the hip replacement! I've had 2 good friends and my mother-in-law that had hips replaced and they have all had good results. I'm coming up on 6 years since I had my bi-lateral knee replacements, and I couldn't be happier with them.
I'd be totally fine with taking a cow moose. I like big antlers, but I love moose meat. Might still happen someday.
My issue with the moose hunt is my rapidly deteriorating bow shoulder. My surgeon wants me to hold off as long as I can as my strength, tendons and ligaments are all still good. I just don't have any cartilage left so I am bone on bone. I've changed up my shooting form to allow for a bow arm position that is the most pain free. I can still shoot, just not 100 arrows per session.
Thanks for the replies thus far and keep them coming!

Moose has always been at the top of my list. I went to Alberta a few years ago but was unsuccessful. My hunting partner did get one there. Since then I’ve had both knees replaced and just retired. Physically I could do it again but financially it will be something I still dream about.

I went years ago and I was the only bow hunter the entire season. Guess who was the only one that did not get a moose? Saw plenty but the guides were not use to bowhunters. My guide to me to come back the next year and her would take me to the places they hunt. I make some home made bows and he said he would trade me a hunt for a bow for his son for Christmas. I made the bow and hunted with him and was able to pull it off. Not a trophy but a bull non the less. I will try to post a pic if I can figure it out. . Shot him with a 48 lb bow.

Terry-that's a very good moose! Would you mind sharing what weight you were shooting with the Slynx?
JR-congrats on the moose and I'm looking forward to photos!

Went back in 2001 & 2003, killed a bull each time with a 51# bamboo backed maple longbow. My partner on the first trip killed a smaller bull and my brother killed a cow on the second trip.
One the second trip there were 4 of us shooting stick bows and everyone had shooting. A couple of the boys had some mmmissing on 4 different bulls.

Saw a pile of them each trip and had multiple shot opportunities. Saw some real dandies (50"+) ended up taking a 37" and a 30".
I think they are pretty much a great critter for a bowhunter.
It's a good day for something.

Nice bulls Rudy. And you are right. They are perfect for a bowhunter.
