Fred Bear vs Kodiak or Polar bear
« on: August 09, 2022, 09:46:16 AM »
I'm looking for the iconic picture of Fred Bear hunkered down behind a rock, drawing his recurve and either a Kodiak or Polar bear coming around the corner. This is for an upcoming project.

Is this the one you're looking for Pat? Even though he's shooting right handed? I believe this was on a broadhead package

Fred originally shot right handed until he had an industrial accident, BTW.

I think he always shot left handed. He lost the tip of one of his right hand fingers in a farming accident when he was a kid so he couldn't grip a bowstring.

I think he always shot left handed. He lost the tip of one of his right hand fingers in a farming accident when he was a kid so he couldn't grip a bowstring.

I had read this snippet while researching Fred Bear:

"*NOTE: Fred Bear shot bows left-handed, despite the fact he was naturally right-handed. A farm accident had cost young Fred part of a finger on his right hand. That injury prevented him from drawing the bowstring and anchoring with his right hand’s fingers, so he switched to shooting 'lefty.' "

I took it as face value that he was originally a right-hand shooter. and "switched". But sounds like he spent his adult career as a lefty. Thanks for clarifying.

Glad you brought up about Fred being a lefty.    I didn't realize that.

I don't think the painting is supposed to be Fred. Just someone's dream scenario.
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

I don't think it is either with the right handed shooter and the longbow, but it definitely draws its inspiration from the scene of Fred shooting his bear on the beach.

It's the scene I'm after and not necessarily whether or not it's Fred.
This will be my next donation for the raffle table at next spring's Tennessee Classic. This will be the 6th archery scene I've done out of paper mache' for the Classic.
Thanks again for the pic, Trenton.

The second photo put up by Trenton is actually Ed Scheif the owner of Alaska Bowhunting supplies, andI believe that’s his son backing him up with a .375 H&H mag , the picture is available for purchase on their website.
Quote from Howard Hill.( Whenever he taught someone to shoot) "Son make up your mind right now if you want to target shoot or hunt as theres a world of differance between the two"
