Pretty much standard arrows for me.  My main setup at the moment is GT 340 shaft, cut to about 31" or so -- forget exactly what they are but they're longer than normal.  Insert is 100 grain brass + another 50 grain screw-in weight.  Heads are 145 single bevel grizzlies or 160 gr zwickey (grizz for big game, zwicks for turkey).  Comes in right around 640 grains total weight, I think.  Bow is at 55# with a thick strip of leather as a strike plate to help increase the dynamic spine.

I recently heard a story of a guy who has been trying to get a bear for a while & finally got his chance.  He got a bear in close & he took his shot with one of those unmentionable arrow launching devices.  400 grain arrow with an expandable head.  Arrow hit the shoulder & bounced out.  So much I could say about that but I'll settle for, "Nope.  Ain't happening to me."

On my 55 @30 bow i run about 240 up font on a 31" 400 shaft. & 265 up front on the Heritage 350's, Total weight about 550.

my 49 @30 i set up with a bit more FOC using a similar 240 up front weight using aluminum over footings about 2" in length. total weight about 500.   Shoots pretty close to the same trajectory up to 30 yards, but with the heavier FOC it drops off quicker at 40 yards than my 15% FOC and heavier shafts. Of course that has 6 pounds more draw weight too.

40lb bow, 30” arrows, .500 spine, 75gr insert, 175gr point, equals 250gr up front.

I remember back when I started, everyone thought my 175 grainers were heavy.  :biglaugh:  Interesting thread.  :campfire:

HA!

Yep, same here..... and I'm still shooting them 30 years later. 90% of the time for sure.  I've killed everything pretty much with that weight.

I think the heaviest head I ever killed anything with was 200 grain Abowyer Large Bonehead  added with my 42 grain insert riding on an Arrow Dynamics Trad Lite out of a 70# bow....making for 630 grainish arrow.  They became Sponsors so I set out to kill something with them immediately.  Ran up to the Cohutta Wilderness during turkey season, only because that meant I could chase hogs, and I ended up with this....

Then there was the Wensel Woodsman with a 100 grain steal adaptor making for a 225 grain head....

Oh, I did kill a Javie pillow this year with a Battle Axe at about 235 grains with insert.

My 300 gr point journey started in 2008 with 300 gr BH (Big Jim 3 blades)
. Now I use lighter gear : mainly 2 bows made by BigFoot : a Sasquatch recurve around 54-55# on fingers at my 32 “ draw length  and a Sasquatch hybrid longbow 53# @32” gr
I still end with either 350 gr either 300 gr point weight on my set up
I use only the same 200 gr BH now for all game for all and 2 types of shaft : black Eagle 5/16 carnivore 350 that tunes perfectly with 150 gr steel insert (+200gr heads) and 9/16 black eagle rampage perfect with 100 gr HIT insert (+200 gr heads)
Both arrow are nicely tuned for both bows. I mostly use for bowhunting the 5/16 set up as it is little heavier and I have many of these still left 630 gr vs 590 gr for the 9/16. As I am an Africaholic bowhunter i used extensively those set up on heavy game (gemsbok wildebeest zebra eland bull and cow kudu hartebeest etc…) as well as medium game (local euro deers and hogs muflon and medium Africa game such as impala warthogs spring bucks duiker etc)  with satisfaction.
Here are some of the 2022 Zimbabwe safari pics with that set up
(Sorry for the rotated pics but can t fix it)

I am shooting 32” GT Hunter 400’s with 120 grain insert and 130 grain Rothaar Snuffers, 4-4” feathers and Nocturnal lighted nock for a total arrow weight of 550 grains 13.71 gpp out of my 40lb Uukha Gobi limbs with a 21” EXE Scream riser and a 29.25” draw length at 168fps.

My thumb is where it stopped. Imo pretty good penetration for a 40.1lb bow. Getting antsy for Saturdays NJ opener. Took 5 quality shots after dinner with 4 in the ten ring and one just a hair outside.
