Me, I'm just a meat hunter and I like to do it trad
« on: August 16, 2022, 03:57:49 PM »
I am not wealthy, just an average guy that has always loved to shoot trad and to hunt trad. Even more so, love selfbows etc and like to build them. My Father is an Elder and so I am mostly what is called Native American. I am 65 years old and have been messing with bows of sorts since I was a kid. All though it would cool to go to Africa to take some game, it will never happen for someone like me and besides, my health won't let me. Besides, I got in all of the flying and such in the military and don't care to do it anymore. Horns, I got some nice ones but I have never gone trophy hunting to be trophy hunting. I hunt for the meat, the horns are a bonus but many get turned into knife handles anyways. If there had ever been an animal that I would have traveled to hunt for, it was the Moose up north. But those days are over and so it is pretty much deer, hogs, bear and turkey where I am and I have harvested a few of them. I choose to live where I do in spite of the lower wages and opportunities because this is where I wanted to live and bring my kids up. We still have people that say Sir and Mam here and even kids that respect their elders. I shoot and hunt trad because it is what my ancestors did and I just love to do it. You won't ever see me on a show or even in a video, no desire to do it. I love to get others involved with trad bows but especially the selfbows. I post a few posts mainly for the average person that will never go to these exotic places and for them to see that a lot of what they may experience happens to others. No, I am not a person that anyone knows or will ever do anything special to be known as being special but neither were most of the men that took down Custer and his troops. This world is changing fast, very fast and what so many do and love to do will be soon gone as we know it now. An old Elder once told me that change is permanent, the old ways are soon forgotten. And so I say good luck to you all and may your arrow fly true.

Ecclesiastes 2 comes to mind.
All that is built will be turned to dust in the end.  But the spirit lives on.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

I know that many just love to shoot trad, some for the challenge, some because of the pure simplicity of it and some see the beauty of it. For many, the compound was just too easy, almost like automatic and so they began to seek a greater challenge. But then some had to take it to the next level and use a self bow. But then the bug hit and many had gone the make it myself bow. Many have made board bows and have done quite well with them while others have gone to the various woods out there to make bows out of. Yep, a lot of broken bows and a lot of very weak bows but that is just part of the process. Like I explained to a young man today, he hunts with a compound, there is just something about taking anything but we are talking deer with a bow of any sorts is pretty awesome. But take it to trad and then it becomes kind of special. But when you go to a self bow, you just made it a lot harder (for many) and even more special. But the ultimate is to both make the bow as well as the arrows and heads, then everything is a trophy because you made it all happen yourself. So, after some head nods, you string up a bow and let him take a shot with a self bow. The big smile says it all. He won't forget this at all.  And Thanks GCOOK, loved the scripture, heap big truth in that!

Have always felt that hunting with a stickbow puts me more in step with the ones who came before me, and always take time to say thanks and give honor to the life I've just taken.
Now we're digging where the taters are.

I think a lot of trad shooters are much like you, in that they hunt in the manner that suits them and don't seek fame or any formal recognition. It is good to occasionally be reminded that our simple approach is shared by so many of our on-line friends. That said, if Bullwinkle does come along, his antlers are going on the wall (not very likely).

I agree Sam, I won't turn down a biggie if it happens. I say that and then I helped my wife to kill a buck bigger than any of mine. Big is cool and fun to talk about but in the end, I'm more concerned about it just being a legal deer for the meat. I like to eat poppers too much as well as fried etc. I made 60 poppers a month ago so I could get maybe 8 or 9, my dad and my brother claimed most of them. So I made a bunch more and my brother took most of them back to Florida with him. My little Yankee wife is a full blown carnivore so I had to teach her to hunt to help keep the freezer full.

Simple poppers. Cut venison into strips to fit the jalapenos or longer. Marinate the meat, I usually use Worchester sauce, soy sauce, with some garlic powder and pepper (red cayenne) and onion powder. I split the jalapenos in half lengthwise and scrape out clean (I use a spoon). I usually take a package of bacon and cut the whole package in half. I let a package(s) of cream cheese soften before using a butter knife to fill the peppers flush. Then I add a slice of meat on top before wrapping with the bacon. I use two round toothpicks to pin the bacon completely thru to keep the popper together. Then cook however you want to until the bacon is done. I have done it in the oven, the air fryer as well as the grill or the smoker. You can lose some of the cheese when grilling if not careful. You can also add slices of onion or whatever you want. They are habit forming like a Lays potato chip, hard to stop eating.

Thank you Arrow30, Pics are an extreme challenge for me, even when I figure out how to do something, I have to do it a lot everyday or it is gone. But those poppers look mighty fine to me, I always look for the biggest peppers I can find. my wife won't eat them so I make hers with Italian Sweet peppers. To me they are like candy with no sugar. I have even put a couple between hamburger buns for a sandwich LOL.

Tim, the first poppers that I ever saw were made with dove meat and they were pretty good too.

Tradslinger,
You have a fortunate way of life where you live. Hunting for meat is just as it should be.
I live in the UK where hunting with a bow is illegal.Even hunting with a rifle is severly restricted.
More and more a countryman's way of life is frowned upon as most people live in cities and they
think meat comes from a supermarket shelf.
Your hunting ethics are to be admired and long may it continue.
