Myrtle 59” Kodiak Special ( my way)
« on: August 16, 2022, 06:15:05 PM »
I have not made a bow for a couple years now and made this one for a relative.
It’s a 1959 Kodiak Special with a few tweaks. 62” long and 40#@28”.
Tiger Myrtle riser with Purpleheart inserts.
Caramel glass. Working on string grooves and final sanding grits.

Nice representation of the Kodiak. It should be a knockout once finished.

Really nice looking bow
I have always liked that style. That and the St. Charles style recurve are very svelte looking and fun to shoot.

Thanks for the kind words. I’m a longbow fella myself but grew up with the older bows and like the simple lines and aspects of the era. This is for my nephew and want him to look up the history of the Bear Kodiak’s so he understands a little of the History and following of these bows. Nostalgia at its best, bring passed on from one generation on the way out, To a generation just finding its legs. !!

Been doing a little finish sanding and applying 4-5 coats of Tru oil.
Have string keeper made and bow stringer. Working on a Doz P.O. Cedar arrows.
Going to apply finish clear coats in a few days.

Nice job Gary.

It looks like you have tip wedges in the core. Is that correct? It's got a decent looking bend in the limbs. Are you going to try it with a lower brace height and longer string? Those older Bear Kodiaks always shot better with a bit longer string braced at around 7" -7.25" .

Gotta love that myrtle wood. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:      Kirk

Yeah Kirk, going to play with the brace height a bit yet as I finish it up. Gotta make a new string anyway. Making arrows now. The new owner is getting a bow. Arrows, Quiver, arm guard, string keeper, bow stringer, tab or glove. All handmade, by yours truly. Going to a nice young man who’s also a Nephew. !!

Started on the arrows, POC Cedar- 40-45# spine and black and yellow feathers. Black crown dip with yellow bands and grey fine borders on the yellow bands to match the grey nocks.
