New longbow hunter
« on: August 19, 2022, 05:53:44 PM »
My middle son has come back to country life after the Air Force and a few years in the city. We’ve been shooting bows a lot this summer, he thought he was left eye dominant, so not having time to build him a lefty , I bought a 45 lb left hand black hunter from Big Jim with the two tone riser. Great looking and shooting bow but Brandon didn’t really take to it and with further checking it seems like his eyes are pretty much equal. So he took my backup longbow and shot righty and was doing better with it . So the recurve got put up. Guess I’ll have to get it to the classifieds and buy more arrows with proceeds . LOL

Meantime I asked him what color fletching he likes for hunting so we can tell our arrows apart. Tried to get him to get pink but he wanted flo green. They got here today and I have started in on the arrows this eve.

More to come ...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

That's good stuff Kenny.  My son has ZERO interest in archery or the outdoors.  It's a blessing to have a child enjoy it with you

Yep it will be great to have a hand with draggin!! LOL

Gary, my oldest son was all over the recurve deer hunting, he was really getting the hang of it when he passed away in 2008 .

Brando was in the AF and just never got into it much. Youngest was in college and now lives in the big city and has a family, so it was just the ol man til now. I'm hoping Brandon is totally hooked on it but if not, that's ok too...

That brings back some memories though somewhat in reverse order. My son was a bowhunting fool; had taken close to 15 deer with a recurve before he turned 20...then he developed target panic and just overnight gravitated toward firearms.

That doesn't matter though. He's grown now with a family of his own; but he still shares a hunt or two with me each year. That's all I could ask.

I'm sure you feel the same. Having a son to go hunting with you is a 'win' regardless of his weapon. Hope your's takes off on the archery end of things.

My son took to hunting early, killed several deer including a good buck in Missouri.  Rifle kill of course when he was 12.   But his allergies were so bad a weekend hunting meant a week of sick, breathing treatments and often, an ER trip.  So it just didn't work.  He works with me part time now and we share in other activities.  Just tree pollen, oak and cedar tear his airways up.
Sorry to hear about your other son Kenny.  All of us dread the thought of something like that yet sometimes that is a cross we are given to bear.
Those fletching should be quite visible. But hopefully a little bloodier when you find them.

My youngest son Ross is allergic to tree pollen also , bad stuff.

Brandon has allergies also but not quite as bad.

I don’t remember many folks having allergies when I was growing up.

Had a bro in law who couldn’t help us haul hay because he had hay fever he claimed. Back then I figured he was just lazy but I guess I was wrong. Now a lot of folks have bad allergies...

Good stuff Kenny.  Yeah, makes me wonder who did what to peanuts.  No one I have ever known, nor heard of had peanut allergies.

One of the things I miss after we retired and moved. Not having the weekly shooting sessions with my son. Now we are far apart I doubt he shoots at all. Working middle shift doesn’t help either. I always made his arrows as well. Still have some in arrow rack. He liked the pink, easy to see.

I think our use of chemicals in life has poisoned us somewhat ...

Life is way busy for a family getting started it seems, prob was for us also...

Gary, he should be here to load your deer!  :biglaugh:

We are going to start some elevated shooting this week to practice treestand shots. It's easy to shoot over stuff from a stand. For me anyway... :biglaugh:

I like your confidence!!!

I think you will see plenty of deer and have some chances.

I've always said " there's not a big buck behind every tree here but has been at some time..."  :goldtooth:

And plenty of does to keep things exciting.
Stay sharp, Kenny.
