Good chance you'll be hunting from the ground if you leave a stand in on public land ......seen that and heard about it too many times and it's terrible. I say if you bring what you need for an elevated set, make sure it's a climber or saddle or whatever you're willing to lug out with you when you leave. I've had lots of fun doing both on public land and seen lots of animals, though I have never killed a deer from the ground on public land and have had most of my luck from the trees.......but maybe would be different if I had spent more time on the ground! Huge pros to either choice and huge fun to be had as well. Just remember hunting public land, you are never alone ..... and not all have the decency to keep their hands off things that don't belong to them. I hate to hear about people having their stuff vanish into thin air during some point between leaving for the night and going back in the early morning.
