This was my eleventh solo bowhunt in Alaska. I've hunted five different mountain range. I was flown in with my gear. My camp was composed of Kifaru Sawtooth tent, light tarp floor, Thermarest light cot, Big Agnes lite core air mattress, Kifaru Slick Bag zero rated sleeping bag. I use the Jet boil to boil water for Mountain House meals, Katadyn Vario to sterilize water, and relax in the evenings as the sun sets around me in a Helinox One camp chair with ball footings. So, I'm not surviving in the wilderness, I use all this equipment and food that I bring to allow me to Hunt moose in the wilderness alone. I bring a Satellite phone to call pilot.

Lots of moose sign

It is so exciting to call out into the wilderness like a cow in heat, and then you get a response of grunting from an approaching suiter. As the bull comes closer and closer, the anticipation raises to new level as often I've not made eye contact to judge the size. I had many nocked arrows during this trip. Can't wait to hunt moose again in the future.

Image drudging back to camp in the rain and finding the remnants of a party balloon laying in the tag alder thicket. What a message of love!

Thanks Mike . I’ve also enjoyed your posts and the great photos about hunting in AK.  I served in the 172nd Infantry Brigade in AK for about two and a half years.

I didn’t hunt much but did numerous back pack trips and floated the Kenai and the Little Susitna.  Your photos bring back vivid memories for me!

Very glad I did that when I was a young man, I couldn’t do it now, at age 70 with my health.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for taking us on the journey with you!

I can only imagine what the scenery looks like in person if it is that beautiful in the pictures.

Could you tell us about your bow hunting equipment--bow, arrow, broadhead configuration? Do you carry extra limbs, strings, arrows, etc.?

Thanks,
Josh

I wrecked on a dirt bike on 4th of July and separated my collar bone at the AC joint. I was worried about not being able to draw my bow. I worked into a 54 pound bow in late August, but made it into my 62 pound Stalker Herdbull Wolverine 64" recurve by leaving date. I usde 2219 32 inch arrows tipped with 250 gr two blade Cutthroat broad heads. During the previous few seasons for moose, I used the Tuffhead two blade. This year I thought I would try the single bevel Cutthroat as they are 1/8 inch wider and weigh less than the mounted Tuffhead. Even though I did not get to test the Cutthroat on the moose, I was a little concerned about the rust creeping in. I covered them in vasoline and chapstick prior to pushing into quiver hood. The rain seemed relentless and the bow setup never did get a chance to dry out. The Tuffheads used in the past are stainless. I used a Selway slip on quiver.

Thank you for sharing this, Mike. Your book and video have inspired me and what I want to accomplish as a bow hunter. I’d be very excited to see this hunt on another edition of Chasing Solitude!

I used to bring a back-up bow, and then changed to just bringing back up limbs for the TallTines bow, but now with weight restrictions etc, I only bring two extra bow strings. Yes, these photos are still frames from HD video I've taken in preparation for a second moose hunting video to compliment Chasing Solitude.
