Overlay question
« on: October 05, 2022, 07:28:31 PM »
Well I got both limbs glued up the last couple nights I think everything went pretty smooth I got the limbs out of the forms and cleaned up.
I need to install now this overlay on the bottom of the Limb were it meets the riser pad, i’m planning on building the overlay and feather to paper thin then When I clamp the overlay on the limb and there’s epoxy that squeezes out the front fade onto the glass can i just clean that part off with acetone while it’s still wet ? and also do I leave the tape on the limb as closest possible to the end of that overlay fade ? to minimize the clean up on the face of the glass . I hope any of this make some sense.  :biglaugh: Havin fun!

you can put masking tape on everything you don't want glue on, and wax the bolts and pins and pin holes.
You need to think this all the way threw.
Take something like a popsicle stick and cut the end flat and scrape some of the glue off a little at a time and wipe the stick on a paper towel over and over and over again. Much cleaner that way, after you get the bulk of the glue off then use a paper towel. the paint thinner may take the finish off.

I would put those overlays on while the limbs are still parallel and check the closely for square before mounting them ….. kind of like this.

Actually…. If you are laying up your own limbs. I would recommend putting those overlays on the limb butts just like I do my recurve tip overlays while you are laying up the limbs…. This takes all the fight out of it, and they come out excellent.

Check out this lay up video.    Kirk

Thanks Kirk yes I should’ve had those overlays made up and I see now I could’ve had them installed at the same time I did the layup.  :knothead: next time I will give it a go.
Question, sanding glass before applying epoxy for overlays what grit is recommended ?
Kirk I have watched the video a couple times now it’s a great help when you can actually see it being done,  I was quite happy my first set of limbs went as smooth as they did ,  when you put the apoxy over top of the overlay what was the purpose of that ? Cheers B

The purpose for putting the layer of EA 40 over the outside of the overly and wrapping in plastic is two fold.

1) when the EA 40 is heated by the heat strips it’s viscosity changes, and it soaks into the pores of the wood and then levels out, giving a pre sealed product that sands out very level and smooth.   If I was building laminated board bows, I would use this technique to infuse the epoxy into the wood and stabilize it.

2) The epoxy also feathers out perfectly smooth in the transition from the overlay to the glass, making sanding it uniformly much easier.

When the overlays are sanded to a feather edge, just like you do a tip wedge, or other internal wedges, your finished overlays will transition into the glass like it is one piece. You cannot even feel the transition.  It does take a bit of practice getting the shape to match each limb, and is best sanded by hand. I’ve screwed up a few using a palm sander trying to speed up the process….

I rough sand my glass with 80 grit prior to applying the overlays, and clean the glass with acetone.    Kirk
