The purpose for putting the layer of EA 40 over the outside of the overly and wrapping in plastic is two fold.
1) when the EA 40 is heated by the heat strips it’s viscosity changes, and it soaks into the pores of the wood and then levels out, giving a pre sealed product that sands out very level and smooth. If I was building laminated board bows, I would use this technique to infuse the epoxy into the wood and stabilize it.
2) The epoxy also feathers out perfectly smooth in the transition from the overlay to the glass, making sanding it uniformly much easier.
When the overlays are sanded to a feather edge, just like you do a tip wedge, or other internal wedges, your finished overlays will transition into the glass like it is one piece. You cannot even feel the transition. It does take a bit of practice getting the shape to match each limb, and is best sanded by hand. I’ve screwed up a few using a palm sander trying to speed up the process….
I rough sand my glass with 80 grit prior to applying the overlays, and clean the glass with acetone. Kirk
