Spot and crawl hen
« on: October 16, 2022, 12:40:36 AM »
Shot this hen about a week ago around 4pm.  I was actually walking to my deer stand on a particular permission farm that has big ag fields.  Saw them about 125 yards out and made the move.  Crawled along the edge of the beans.  It was a fairly windy day - 20-30mph and was able to quietly crawl all the way within 25 yards of the flock (of 16 hens).  They kept inching closer and I got to my knees and set my draw and just kind of popped up and came to full draw and 2 birds on the right broke off from the group a little at the sight of me and then stopped and looked back at the flock.  I lined up the shot and put it right through her back.  All hell broke loose as the flock erupted but the bird I shot stayed put.  Pretty cool to have a successful stalk on a flock of turkeys.  I was psyched!  Used my 58” Primaltech longbow 51@28 drawn to 27” - ten ring string - 29” black eagle x-impacts - 100gr Focos insert/outsert - 200 grain vpa 3 blade.

Well done-great stalk. Good eating as well.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Well done.  That’s how I hunt Merriman turkeys here in NM, and I can tell you the success rate is low. Any time you pull it off should be cause for celebration.

Great job on that stalk! Congrats! I did almost the same thing on a flock a couple of years ago. Snuck along a fence line and shot a young bird through the neck.

Excellent !!!

Being an opportunistic hunter is a beautiful thing .... Spot & stalk is about the hardest way to make meat in "most" instances ...But man is it exciting ;)  Turkeys have the best eyes in the buisness , so not an easy task ...Congratulations on a mighty Big accomplishment !    Enjoy the gifts given & best with the rest of your season ......
