Osage seedlings!
« on: May 10, 2008, 02:02:00 PM »
On a whim I planted a few hedge apples collected from the one local tree I know of. I let them sit out all winter, mashed em up, planted some in my compost pile, and some in some pots.
I have about 15 coming up now. If all goes well in twenty years or so I will have all the osage I need.  :biglaugh:

Got any of the juice left from those seeds, Jamie???  Offer from the JLMBH still stands...  :bigsmyl:

Use tubing around the seedings to make them grow tall, straight and less limbs! You've probably seen tree farmers and conservation efforts of the same sort!

I did the same thing two years ago. I lost two of the five seedlings over the winter. I have three that saplings that look good. I'm planning on buying some property in a few years. I plan to plant these saplings then.

I was lucky enough to get some from up in the mid west, and planted 'em this spring.  Just now comming up.  Have already planted some of my own from last year.  In the wet bottoms they look good, but where its dry they're hurting.  Next time I'll wait until the fall and set them out.  Got several hundred set out.  Put some in an old fence row at dad's old farn, well my wife mowed the biggest one down last summer.  It was about 5' and 3 or 4 yrs. old.  They'll be better marked from now on!
