Arrow Flopping
« on: May 10, 2008, 08:23:00 PM »
I recently got a new string for my recurve.  It is suppossed to be the same type of material as what was on the bow previously. I thought TS-1 was on it and that is what I requested. It seemed to be narrower though.  My nocks are looser than before.  But I feel that it is a better made string than before.

Also I am a 3 under shooter.

Anyway, I set it up just like my old string.  Same brace and nock height.  Tuned broadheads against field points and the nock read high, so I made the adjustment.  Started to get a flop to my arrow with the fletches kicking up and down but field points and broadheads were grouping together vertically but reading a little stiff.  So I added point weight and got them grouping good with the fieldpoints.

Still had the occasional flop though.  Seems the hen down was hitting my finger and the outside of the rest some.  Turned cock vane in and bam, my arrows were flying good.

Today I decided to shoot cock vane out and every once in a while I was getting the flop.  I noticed it in my release.  Seems my ring finger is hanging up, at least that how it feels.  So I switched to split finger, and my arrows were flying perfectly.  Only hitting higher than before.

I assume this is due to the arrow being lower under my eye.

My question is... Can a poor release cause the arrow to flop?  Should I try a tab?

Does changing strings normally screw things up so bad?  Is it common for your arrow to become too stiff or weak with a new string?

I went to 3 under because I didn't like split when I first started.  But if it is going to shoot this good, I may switch.  Plus my bow seems quieter.

Yes, a poor release can cause the arrow to flop.  But it might also be a too high or low nock point.

Same type of string material at the same brace and nock point shouldn't screw things up very much, but might affect arrow flight a little.  May need to tweek the brace and nock point.

Split finger tends to put less stress on the bottom limb and probably reduces limb vibration a little, accounting for the reduction in noise.

Do you use a second nock point below the arrow nock. If not try tying one on with dental floss and see if it helps. With 3 under and lose nocks (witch is a good thing) upon release the nock will slide down the string and cause all kinds of flight problens.

Thanks for the replies.

I second the bottom nock.  It did a lot of good for me.

Are you taking into consideration string stretch? Before setting final nocking point shoot a while to work in the string!
