what's wrong with my silencers?
« on: May 11, 2008, 04:50:00 PM »
my beaver balls do not want to stay in the string.  i followed the direction on the package.  i split the string and kept wrapping it until there was nothing left to wrap.  after a couple of shots the ends want to come out.  they do and it just looks odd.  not a picture perfect ball like i had seen on others.  any tricks?

Make sure you wrap them in the same direction as the string's twist....and I use to dab them with a drop of super glue on the outside of the tag end at the base where it enters the string.

Mine aren't the perfect balls either, but they get much closer if after I've wound them up, I 'scrunch' the ends together, if that makes sense.

never even thought about that.  now with the glue thing,  are you actually glueing the tab to the string?

i wish they'd look nice and pretty, but that's okay if they don't cause they really take the noise out of the string. i was quite shocked.

well, i guess there's no issues with the chemical in the superglue eating away at the string then huh?

I've heard that super glue will eat up the string...but I've got some strings that are over 6 years old(pre Hush Puppy days) and I still shoot them on occasion. One being the selfbow I made back in 98....shot it just the other day.

No worries - "super glue" (aka "CYA") will NOT "eat away" any bowstring fiber, either Dacron or modern HMPE.

You have both ends tucked into the string, right?  I tuck the first end in and put a spacer down below, string the bow, wrap the fur, tuck the second end in, then pull out the spacer.  Haven't had a problem yet.

It also helps to brace your bow slightly lower when you're installing them.  That way when you twist it up to the proper brace you're tighting the silencer... same thing for serving.
