Switched to carbons + bare shaft testing
« on: March 04, 2023, 09:15:39 PM »
I’ve only ever shot aluminums, and I switched this week to Carbons.  Shooting a 3D event tomorrow in the snow, should be fun!

I spent a few days bare shaft tuning then stump shooting along with some targets and arrows are flying well, all dialed in.

For 20 years I’ve always taken the time to bare shaft plane because it produces a better flying arrow, which offers up more “forgiveness” if my form is off.

For example, prior to bare shafting the fletched arrows were flying true, hitting where I was looking at 20-25 yards.  However, once I cut off the fletching the bare shafts impacted a full foot left of the fletched arrows at 25 yards (showing stiff) and about 8” low, consistently.  Once I added point weight and lowered my nock point, bare shaft and fletch landed together.  This absolutely transfers into better tuned arrow.

Interesting that my point on went from 25 yards to 30, with a flatter trajectory with the carbons.

I am a firm believer in bare shaft tuning, everything to gain and nothing to lose.
caught between:If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it and can’t leave well enough alone.

The point-on change could have been a few things:

1. Carbon arrow stabilizing faster and, therefore wasting less energy on the way to the target.
2. Carbon arrow is a touch shorter, therefore changing the location of the arrow point.
3. Carbon arrow outside diameter is smaller, therefore changing the location of the arrow point.

There could be other factors, but I think it may be one of the above.

Bisch really encouraged me to bareshaft tune.  However it was too early in my shooting when I first tried.  Between my lack of consistent form and the variances in my release it was a night mare.  However after I got that covered and the process down I use it because it works.  The fact it will point out form flaws as well is helpful.  But as my strength and consistency improved so did my draw length.  Bare shafting some new arrows of the same spine they wouldn't tune as the old ones did.  Frustrated and out of answers why I checked my DL and behold over time it had grown an inch.  Back tension sure improves things.  I keep some bare just to check myself with.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.
