52” Takedown recurve bowyers
« on: April 03, 2023, 10:02:55 PM »
Does anyone still make a 52” takedown recurve bow like the old Cascade magnum from Steve Gorr?
I’d love to have one.

Good question Rob.Cant think of any off hand.might start by looking at every Bowyers website and whats the shortest T.D recurve they make in a 3 piece. Also if you dont mind a 2 piece recurve thier are some that are pretty short.

Might look into the shortest ILF risers paired with the shortest ILF limbs available.

I would love to find  a short 'pocket curve' to take with me on certain outings. 52" take down, either 2 or 3 piece, for some of the nasty I go in for critter recovery.

I'm going to subscribe to this thread to see what comes up. Might even trade an annual Sponsorship and Banner for one.

I'll also check the classifieds.

Thanks to all for the interest
I killed a bunch of deer years ago with a Cascade Golden Hawk magnum. It was a little heavy in poundage and I sold it. I think if a bowyer took that same Cascade design and added fast flight capability and some of the other new technology in bow building they’d have a real winner. I know about some of the short one piece designs available but one piece short bows aren’t as easy to shoot as a heavier riser 3 piece in my opinion. Plus packability is much better.
Pop up blind hunting is big this time of year for Turkey hunting and a 52” will work in almost  any pop up blind.  No need to buy the extra large taller pricier blinds.

Loved my Cascade Golden Hawk Magnum, too! But at 67# it became too much and sold it long ago. Wonderful, smooth shooting short bow that I used from a seated position in my tree stands. Would love to find one in a light weight but have been looking for awhile now.

The KT44 and JT44 are the shortest made 3 pc TD made these days if John is still building them.

Maybe reach out to Shrew, JavaMan, St. Joe River bows, they all make short recurves, not sure if they're that short, but they may be willing to work with you to come up with one in a take down model.  Never hurts to make a phone call and make new friends.

Kelly,
I remember my 52” Cascade magnum being very forgiving. It wasn’t super fast but I shot through everything. I couldn’t miss…well maybe a time or two.😜
I feel like there’s a big demand for one just like Steve Gorr made. Now that he’s retired I think he’d be honored by some bowyer using his great design.  Check Mate archery in Canada makes similar bows in longer lengths so maybe someone on the forum that knows the bowyer can convince Chekmate to make them again.

Denny Behn of early Bighorn days had a hand in the design of the first Golden Hawk Magnums. They were available in 48” and 52” length.

It is my understanding that part of the reason they are no longer available is the bowyer at Checkmate had/has issues.

So for now I’ll just settle for my 56” Bear TD’s. I did find a 54” China made 3 pc TD that shoots pretty good. But now they went and changed the handle shape, of which I don’t like.

In ILF, a 13” handle and shorts makes a 54” bow and I guess there are some manufacturers making extra shorts which would make a 52” bow.

I know its not 52", but Fedora made 54" takedowns.  I had 2 of them and shot them for 3-4 years..  Loved the short bow, shot them Ok..  just preferred his 560 over them..

Right this minute My boat is  parked on the bank just below felkel boat ramp while I’m up the hill sitting in a blind calling to a turkey. Good to hear from you. I live on lake Russel and keep a Jon boat hidden on the bank just down the hill from my house. Let me know the next time you’re in town.

Shrew Lil Favorite can be made in two piece and comes in at 54”.  It’s a great shooting little bow.

A TimberGhost G3SS 54" Takedown will string as short or likely shorter than a typically strung 52" recurve.

A high end performer.

Check with Little Suckling Bows. They used to offer some real stubby recurves.
