3 lams vs 4 lams

Does anyone notice an increase in drawweight if , whilst still maintaining the same stack height, but an extra lam is used?
Does the extra glue line add significantly to the stiffness/draw weight?

I can easily see .010 difference from veneers under clear glass to two tapers and black glass...

But it would depend on the thickness of the veneers and wood type used.  Most guys rarely use less than .025-.030 thickness on veneers....

Btw..... I wouldn't recommend an .003 forward taper on any recurve limb like its shown on Jim's chart there... He always was a wild and crazy guy...

As a matter of fact..... i still have his WTT entry bow from 2008. (i think that was 2008?) When it was all said and done, he sent it home with me...Told me i could use it to stake my tomatoes if i wanted...

The guy was a hell of a craftsman, and a fun guy in person..... Wonder if he is still building a few bows?

I think milling a veneer down to .015 would be a risk in loosing your veneer, But I have milled a vertical boo parallel down to .018 on a Hog thickness sander.   I have bought veneer sheets at .015 (don't know how they do it).

His limb width is 1-5/8" parallel out to 7" from the nock with a .003 forward taper, his drawings are like Binghams projects to make it easier for the beginner to make a bow. Also he has a good bit of deflex on the limb pads.           I bought his drawings years ago ($15.00 EDIT e-drawings) but modified them to make a 1 piece bow with a .002 forward taper.
I friended him on facebook 3-4 years back but don't see any bows he has been building.

I lost track of Jim Thorne years ago. He is a great guy with an exceptional mind.
He never had a problem obsessing on details, and spent a lot of time doing mad scientist tests with different limb lengths and pivot point analogy’s. A lot of those points we didn’t agree on…

 He was really into testing different bow designs and always tinkering with different stuff. We had some great debates over the years. I miss him.

After WTT II we talked at length about getting another one set up and I considered hosting it myself. But… it didn’t pan out, and I lost track of him over the years.

I think the thinnest veneers i ever did was .012 bubinga... I've still got the bow too. It's my own hunting bow.... Why so thin?   I was doing a prototype / hot rod hybrid model using .020 glass over .012 veneers and .030 uni carbon just under the veneers belly and back with zebra and paduke cores. I did use thicker glass on the belly for sanding purpose.... But.... I never built another one like it.

I wouldn't recommend using .020 glass for backing though.... The limbs did fine for about 6 years, then that thin glass splintered on the edge on one limb. I repaired it, and did a camo paint job on the limbs, and the bow is now about 15 years old.... Still going strong after 12,000 arrows or more...... 55 @ 30" draw , She's pretty hot....  Kirk

Oh i know.... I've got a Big Foot Bows page with 2.1 K followers, and a personal page for family... But..... i just don't like the format and all the BS you need to sort through.... I log in now and then to check messages and occasionally post something here and there. But its time consuming trying to keep up with it....   Kirk

I got a cortisone shot last week in my lower back…. I Got a bit of relief, but not what I was hoping for. Might have to go do that again….

How long do you have to wait?

 They told me 2 to 6 months crazy things happen though I went ahead on my own and got in to see two of the most experienced physiotherapist around here  they are the first two that I’ve done a serious examination of me actually touched my back lol and they’re telling me my nerve pain is not coming from my L4 L5 but from my sacrum and coccyx joint  lots of nerves there  i’ve had two sessions with some improvement They said fusing my back is not gonna take away my pain . Wouldnt that have been a kick in the s€£¥§.  I’m hoping for miracles here I don’t want to get cut     Kirk I hope those shots help you .
