Fiberglass performance
« on: April 13, 2023, 06:09:42 PM »
A question for those with experience using fiberglass in bows: have you noticed any difference in the performance in the various colors of glass, black vs white and clear? Would appreciate hearing your thoughts.

Oh sure…. There are always rumors, and I’ve heard the same about black glass. But honestly….I seriously doubt there is any measurable difference. I’ve never seen it myself…

Actually… when using veneers under clear glass, and more laminations in your limb. You might see a little less spring back in your form, and gain a bit higher preload tension…. Does that make a noticeable difference in performance?

Splitting hairs me thinks…… .02 cents

Actually someone said that black glass was stiffer in a conversation with Adcock. His response was don't tell them all the secrets   :bigsmyl:

Thanks for your input guys. I assume that the only difference in all the colored glass is the pigment used to obtain the color, which might present different masses for different colors that could affect performance. Might follow that clear glass w/o pigment would be a bit faster, but veneer and extra glue makes it hard to compare performance. Like y’all said it’s not a big deal.

One other question, I have not used white glass much, but it always seems to be striped, not a solid color like the black and other colors are. Has anyone ever gotten white glass that was a solid color like black? Just bugs me when someone asks for white …

Elmont Bingham told me a month ago that he is shutting down. So if you need some stuff better do it now. I am sad to see him go, have bought stuff from him since the early 1990 ties. Good old fashioned service is getting more and more scarce. Hope he will have a good retirement.

Straight from the horses mouth…. They ran out of .040 black glass in 1.75” so I inquired as to when they would get more… got a letter saying they were shutting down and going to retire….. if you shop there, ya might want to get what ya need now… there will be close out prices on many things.   Kirk

I ordered 200 pins off the big site pretty cheap. Tried to get inserts made local and they wanted about $4 apiece for them .
