Looking for some input on new set up
« on: June 27, 2023, 03:49:26 PM »
Due to elbow and shoulder issues had to reduce draw weight. Shooting hybrid longbow @ 45 lbs. 30” arrow @472 grn. So just under 10.5 gpp. 200 grn. up front. 19% FOC. Mainly hunt whitetail and occasional black bear. Could probably shorten arrow enough to add another 25 grn. up front. Thoughts???

Shortening the arrow will take away 25 grains.  So you're still at 472.

If the arrows are tuned, no need to change anything for whitetail or bear.

Arrow is only 7.9 grains per inch. Additional 25 upfront would also increase FOC.

25gr may get you to 20% foc if that is your goal. Heavier arrow will be quieter but slower. I would try it, but I love to tinker. If you can handle the extra drop at distance and remain accurate go for it.

Maybe I'm lost kat, what's the huge gain in foc and drop in cutting the arrow off(taking away weight) to add 25 grains back?

It's been a long day, maybe I missed something.... I have before.  :smileystooges:

If he is shooting parallel carbon arrows should only need to cut maybe 1/8-1/4" so not much weight or length loss, if he is well tuned now. Getting to 20% is only 1% more than current setup of 19%, that's not a huge increase. Or he could leave arrow same length and build out strike plate a touch to compensate for the weaker dynamic spine upping point weight. He will be going to 11gpp so more drop at distances. Does that make any sense?

The gain with this particular shaft would likely be observed only on paper.

Mental gymnastics during off season is good.

If you have perfect arrow flight, I use bare shaft test to determine that, and the trajectory fits your needs I wouldn't change it.  I'm killing game in Texas, Missouri, Africa and use close to the same type of set up.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

Im looking at this and I could be wrong but .....I believe what you are asking and what has maybe been missed here,  is if you shorten the arrow,  would you be stiffening the spine enough to allow you to pack on point weight to get that FOC  (EFOC at that point I'd say!)?   Am I tracking correct here?
All that aside,  I lean toward what GCook said,  what you have going already seems like it's be good to go,  not sure a change would be worth the fuss for ya,  especially if you're accuracy is where you want it to be.
But then again,  if you got the time and energy, push it to the limit til you go too far and then maybe real it in again,  just for the sake of experimenting and learning.  Sure done that a time or two  :goldtooth:

I didn't see where Freesh said he had a need to cut them off.  :coffee:

And Kat, you know that South Carolina doesn't have an 'off season'.  Mental gymnastics.... Now why did those hogs go in that direction?????  :campfire:

Thanks for the input guys. If I added the weight up front I would have to short shaft slightly to get tuned. Mainly wondered if increasing FOC would help penetration at lower draw weight. I’m used to shooting more poundage. After everyone’s comments, probably just going to leave it be. Getting good flight and accuracy as is. Thanks again to all!!

Feesh, you are not going to loose an animal on such a minuscule amount.

Blaming a loss of an animal on that amount would be like me blaming I lost an animal due to one too many feathers on my shaft, or, "if I'd only used a tab".

Concentrate on getting on game as it sounds like your equipment is out of the equation..... as it should be.

Best of luck and bring us PICS!!!  :bigsmyl:

Kat, find us some land so I can come hunt with ya!  I love hunting SC :campfire:

Stay with your set up for deer and bear. At around 10gpp you have a pretty flat trajectory out to 25 yards and a minimum drop at 30 yards. I would change set up only for bigger games elk moose maybe 12 gpp.

Thanks again for everyone’s input! Its easy to start doubting when you get away from what you’re used to! You all have put that to rest!! I would also like to give a shout out to Bob Rousselo at Kohannah bows. I have had one of his kurves in my arsenal since 2009. And my new long bow is his fury Xtreme at 60 inches. It is beautiful and smooth as silk!! Thanks and good luck to all of you!!

I have a deer lease here, archery only, BUT everyone baits and I set up to keep hogs out. Had them scare away to many shooter bucks.

Kat, they won't let you hog hunt during the 'off season'?

Yes, hogs are 365. Problem is your a limited to your area only, 600 yd square.. Don't want to kill one that bad, definitely not in the summer heat.

Heck, growing up hunting in GA I never paid attention to the heat. If so, I wouldn't have killed half the animals I have.  Opening day of deer season here most always includes a day that tops 90 for the high.

No telling how many hogs on days that topped 80 and 90 degrees in GA, SC and FL.

I remember Rob coming down from NJ end of Jude years ago and he killed 3 hogs at The Bacon Strip in SC and the day he killed his biggest it topped out at 97.

Besides, I like my wild hog sausage too much.  :readit:
