Only one survival knife

Usually the Buck knife, my wife gave it to me for my birthday in about 1973.  I’ve used for pretty much all hunting chores that one should use a knife for- field dressing (an awful lot of deer) skinning, butchering.

The other was made by a friend. I mostly use it for deboning meat. It was patterned after a professional deer butcher’s knife.

When I'm thinking about survival, I'm factoring in the need to go one on one, to make it back to home base.  Thus my choice of knives.

A Leatherman Charge and a an old military issue Kabar ! I would be good to go !

Here is my go to knife combo for the last 25+ years. it's an Outdoor Edge combo that was gifted to me and it just does everything I need. It's comfy, will hold an edge and is easy to touch up. I've used the saw for just about everything and it's held up nicely as well.


So, I guess this would be my choice in a survival situation.

Just saw the BK72, an upgraded BK2 model.  Supposed to be a beast!!!  I had a BK2 and now my son has it.

Probably my K-Bar. The version made by Ontario. I know it’s not a full tang, or at least what we call full tang in more modern fixed blade knives but it is tough as nails. It’s tang is a little wider than other versions and the blade seems just a bit thicker. The leather washer handle is skinnier than other versions but it’s coated with a black waterproofing sealant that kept it from rotting in the salt water of the pacific island hoping campaign on WWII. And I like the leather sheath better than the plastic or more modern molded sheaths. It isn’t pretty but it works.

If I had one knife for the end of the world, this would be it.  Not for hiking around, but one that does close to everything the ESSE 6 answers that call.

My only one survival knife would be the one I carry with me every day, and have carried for the last 20 years or so. Digs arrows out of target butts, hammers whatever needs to be hammered, and sharp enough to skin or gut whatever needs to be cut. If it ever gets lost or breaks, another one can be on the way for about $40 (or whatever they’re up to these days).

This would be my "survival" knife. Large enough to chop wood and small branches to make a shelter, if needed.
Short enough to not be cumbersome and debone any game. Five inch blade is wide enough to grasp between index and thumb to skin.
My brother made it for me about 20 years ago out of a 1930s truck leaf spring. The steel has a low nickel content and keeps a wicked edge for a long time. The grip is made out of a nice chunk of birch burl, with a linseed oil finish which id amazingly not slippery, even with hands covered in blood.

This custom from Holland TX is one of my favorite knives to carry scout style.  7 1/2" blade good for whatever you might come up against.  Steel from old saw mill blade, Ironwood burl scales.  Especially, crawling through the brush after a hard hit Javelina.
