Tell your times someone made a statement about traditional archer that seemed like a very silly or stupid statement and or question.

I'll start; this one time years ago I was in a ground blind and a guy with a tree stand on his back walked up to me within a few feet before he saw me and told me he was going to put a tree stand in the tree I was at the base of.
He apologized for walking in on my hunt and then saw my bow leaning against the tree.
He then asked me "Can you actually kill something with that thing?"

Years ago I was coming down a trail on the way back to base camp and crossed paths with a guy with a compound bow. We exchanged greetings and he takes a long look at my longbow and says "You better not let a game warden catch you with that thing, they're illegal in this state."

How much of a deer will that thing penetrate?

Are you actually going to hunt with that?

This is a joke, right? You're not really gonna hunt with that toy bow, are you?

I used to tell people that told me I couldn't kill anything w my bow, "Stand over there w a apple on your head". "I won't guarantee I'll hit the apple but I'll be very close". "I tend to shoot low sometimes"
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

Im the dummy in this story.  When I knew I was going traditional I made a bunch of phone calls for brochures. I should mention this was before Traditional Bowhunter Magazine, or the internet.. I asked Paul Schafer if he actually killed anything with them recurves.... He said I do alright, thats all he said.  Yeah I was an idiot.... Laugh about it often..

Uncasing the K-Mag on the tailgate of my truck to walk in to my stand, compound hunter walks past me and stops and says, "Never saw anyone hunt with one of them things before. Can you actually kill a deer with it?" Say what?

One day years ago my chief antagonist/buddy at the time and I were shooting in a 3D tournament. As we were approaching the next target, where there was a small group of people standing around, my buddy yelled out, “Hey, anybody want to come over here and watch Dave miss?”  Funny, because ordinarily having strangers watch me shoot might make me nervous enough to miss, but his challenge made me focus my attention enough that I nailed it!

That's a good looking walking stick ya got there.
How big is the fiddle that you play that thing with?
Are you too cheap to buy a compound?
Do you actually hunt with that thing?
You must not want to kill anything.

Senior year in college, I was president of the archery club, and there was a kid who would show up every week to shoot his compound. He was a good shot, but wasn't very talkative the first few times he came. Finally he started talking a bit more and admitted that he figured I wouldn't like him very much since he shot a compound. Apparently some trad guys at his range back home had laid into him more than once and he figured we all thought the same about him. I just had to shake my head about that. We've got tentative plans to do a hunt together in the next year or two after he graduates.

Just as I was about to come out of the Cohutta Wilderness I heard a truck coming along the dirt road.  The driver stopped and rolled down his window and looked me over.... and said "Don't even tell me you are bear hunting with that thing". I replied "Yes".  He then said "You're damn crazy" and I replied, "So it would seem".

He then offered to give me a ride back to my truck, and he started insisting that someone must have stole my truck at is was over 3 miles around the other side of the mountain.

That was one long day of blissful solitude let me tell ya.

I remember here in Michigan back in the early 1960s how they were trying to outlaw bow and arrow deer hunting ( was before the wheels ) claiming that two out of three deer died later from bad shots.
Thankfully Papa Bear set that straight.

On a hog hunt with an outfit in Florida,  as I was stringing up my Zipper Nitro at the vehicle ..........
"What do you plan on doing with that?  See that target over there?  The last guys that came through with recurves left it because they were so pissed cuz they kept missing the hogs ........."

Here's one of the best I've heard .......

A good friend of mine who hunts with everything BUT a longbow or recurve ..........
Me:  "Buddy you're a killer and you said you used to hunt with the recurve,  you outa get back at it!"
His response:  "I can't afford to take that chance on a big buck"
At that moment in time after hearing those words come out his mouth,  I literally was asking myself ..... what planet am I on right now?  What just happened?  What part of the whole big picture has become lost on my good friend?  Love the dude,  hell of a hunter,  but I'll never fully wrap my head around that statement.  And this is a guy that in general,  invites a challenge ..........

Eric, I hear ya loud and clear.

I had a friend here for a long time.  We hunted all over together on hunts and had great success together on just about every adventure.  Turns out he was just a fair weather friend.

We never once had an argument, disagreement, rubbed each other wrong, no friction or jealousy between us.

He didn't want to hunt with me anymore cause the bucks weren't big enough or the hunt's weren't in some sort of 'lime light' enough.  He just left, and never returned my emails, texts or phone calls.  He even stiffed the St Judes Auction out of a payment after my repeated attempts to contact him about it.

Reminds me of other guys that have attempted drive bys here.  They come and post under the guise of 'helping others' or 'sharing', but their real agenda is to 'make a name for themselves' and self promote.  And again, another downfall of social media.

I'm a hunter and I don't let the animals control me, nor social media.  Hey, I saw it called 'socialist media' the other day here.  I like that!  :cheesy:

People ask quite a bit “ Can that actually kill a deer?”, or “You must not want to kill anything if you’re hunting with that”.

The funny part is that most of the people that make a comment can rarely kill a deer with a compound or crossbow.

In the 1980's I hunted with friends in central Wisconsin and one weekend as I walked into camp I heard this young boy maybe 12(carrying a compound) tell his Dad "that guy must be poor, look at that bow he has". I didn't say anything as I was shooting a Schultz "trophy Hunter". The next morning it was raining, light but steady, perfect for still hunting. As luck would have it I hunted out of camp a short ways and arrowed a doe lying down. When I drug the deer into camp the rain quit and everyone was up and around, it wasn't long before the young boy was over looking at my deer and I told him " it doesn't matter what bow you shoot it's the arrow that kills".

I'm normally very calm person, as I was at the check station with a deer mind you, the wheel bow hunter also waiting asks me if my name is Robin Hood and if I wear tights when I hunt. At some point after the exchange of various colorful words the state employee had to separate us.
