A Small Game Thread
« on: August 14, 2023, 01:06:26 PM »
Any interest in starting a running thread with pics of small game harvests?  I brought home a grouse here in interior Alaska this weekend.  First kill since breaking my shoulder last year, it's great to be out hunting with the longbow again.

The story:  I was out scouting moose hunting areas, around 6-7 miles down Mystery Road, a dirt road/trail many miles out of town, with a friend.  We were on 4 wheelers, covering a lot of ground.  Going around a corner, I almost bumped into a small bull.  He bolted and ran down the trail in front of us for 50-75 yards.  Soon after, driving a little slower, we jumped a single grouse and it disappeared, we had no idea where it went.  A few minutes later, 4 spruce hens flushed off the road and landed about 25 feet up in a tall spruce.  All four stood in line, left to right, beautifully silhouetted against the clear blue afternoon sky, like someone painted them there.  About 20 yards away and up, it was a nice clear shot, and I hit him square with a 2018 xx75 and G5 small game broadhead.  The other three didn't fly.  My hunting buddy shot a 2nd one with his Henry .22, and the other 2 flushed and disappeared.  Those were the last grouse of the afternoon.  We enjoyed the rest of the day out on the trail, mapped a few spots as possible hunting areas, and ended up racing back to the truck, trying to outrun a storm.

Please post some pics of your successes!

Some good shooting and good eating. I learned to hunt going after small game. Not only is it fun but can be done with others of like mind without worrying about spooking the game like Deer. Lots more shots as well especially if you’re trying to hit them on the run or in flight like Pheasants. Brings back of great memories of my younger days.

I'm headed out this weekend for grouse... but in the meantime, here's a picture of the first 2 kills I ever had with a trad bow.  And one was at 18 yards, believe it or not!!  I was hunting a large field on the side of an industrial park outside of town, good times.  An old picture, from around 2007.
