Thanks for this topic and the input.
For some of us, we grew up very close to food sources. Our families had gardens, and froze or canned vegetables, and hunted for some of our meat. We also raised chickens for eggs and we butchered them ourselves.
Hunting and fishing was another source of food. Ducks, geese, deer and yes turtles. Hunting and killing animals was just part of life. Deer hunting included my grandfather, uncles, cousins, mom and dad. The first year I could hunt my mom, my dad , and I all shot deer.
In 1965 I joined my dad in hunting with a bow. Somewhere along the way I just started enjoying bowhunting more than anything else.
Also I remember reading an article about feeling a little sad about ending an animals life. I asked my dad if that bothered him. He looked at me like I lost my marbles and said “no”. That was just our life.
