I have the merino cargo pants and really like them.  Mid twenties is the coldest temps I’ve hunted in with them, and they worked great with a base layer.  And they’re not too heavy to hike in either.  If I was hunting in extreme conditions I would probably upgrade, but they work fine for the NC/TN mountain areas and early midwest trips that I do…

Thanks Michael! I ordered the non-cargo version. But if they fit, I might try out a pair with the pockets too.

Great thread Jimmy. I'm also in the market for wool pants. I'd been looking at the Big Bill pants as well. Based on the excellent feedback, I'm going to get the 18 oz. Merino wool cargo pants.  :campfire:

Hope they work well for us both. Maybe we can update this thread after we have some experience with them.

Plenty of good brands of wool offered here.  Something to think about is WIND.  How dense is the wool, will it stop wind, is there some kind of wind blocker on the inside of the wool, or are you layering up properly to address various weather situations.  I think movement vs non movement had been covered.

I like a use wool all the time.  From old German Army Surplus, to KOM, to Filson, to Day One and a few others.   Current wool hunting pants would be my Day One's.   I do like my KOM but they are a smidge tight now.

Best of luck on your north woods hunt!

When wearing wool, I like Merino as a base. I have tried first layer Polyester, Cotton, Wool, and Merino. The latter is by far the best and most itch free stuff made.  I remember when a bowhunter (unnamed) from MT wearing poly got badly burned in a tent fire and had to be flown to Utah because of the severity of his burns.  Later, he said the stuff just melts on your skin, if your near a fire and swore that he would never wear the stuff again. Good advice.
Try putting a match close to a piece of poly rope and watch it melt. I can imagine anything with poly shouldn't be worn around an open fire, hot stove etc in the woods. :campfire: :knothead: :help:

I apologize Jimmy if my post is straying too far.
