Wednesday afternoon was pretty incredible! My good friend, Dave Kretschmar and I have had a bait in the mountains of NH for the past 4 years. Bear activity has been pretty solid yet, neither of us have killed a bear off of it.
This year, our site was hit within hours of placing it. A few days in, we had 6 different bears on it.
Monday, a large boar showed up at 1pm! Tuesday, he was back around the same time. I decided that if he did it Wednesday, it would be the last time!
I was on stand by noon time with a other friend. At 3:15 he whispered "big bear behind us!" I looked and saw the largest bear walking up our trail towards the bait.
He stood there for several minutes testing the wind. He the. Turned and went down the mountain towards the brook. We thought he had winded us. 5 minutes later, he came walking up, closer this time. He walked by us a 5 yards, Turned and came to the bait.
He quarted to for a few minutes. Then, at 12 yards, he turned slightly quartering away with his leg forward. I picked a spot, drew, hit anchor and released. The arrow disappeared exactly where I was looking! He let out a roar, ran a short button hook and collapsed 25 yards away!
It will go down as one of my most memorable hunts!
