Sharp Finger
« on: September 30, 2023, 09:42:54 AM »
Hey guys. Just finished up this Sharp Finger design last night. 1084 with caribou antler scales. Fist time using antler for scales. Not perfect but I’m fairly satisfied with it. Now, to make a sheath for it. I like making knives. I do NOT like leather working! 🤣

Awesome work! Like the shape and the way the handle matches the design of the blade sweep somehow..
My dad had the same dilemma many moons ago when it came to a sheath. He decided on wood, and let me tell you what! It turned out so neat! He played out the shape of the blade on to a piece of wood that he had split in half. Then carefully carved out inside of the lines for half the blade thickness on each piece. Essentially forming a clamshell around the blade. One half of the clamshell extended up on the handle, he fit and shaped the area on the sheath to the handle shape. The end result was a very neat little sheath that when you slid the knife in, there was a just barely audible snick as it slid home. A simple leather lace attached it to the belt through a hole in the wood..anyhow there are many ways.

Sounds like a really cool idea for a sheath! Unfortunately, I rank wood working right up there with leather working on my “things that I can do but don’t like to” list. Painting and Sheetrock take the top 2 spots! 🤣

I really like that!

I struggling with making sheaths until I took a class on wester floral carving at Tandy. That taught me a little bit about veg tan leather, and it got me interested in leatherwork in general. I started watching YouTube videos, and eventually, I got to where I really like making sheaths.
