Anyone shoot large bales as targets?
« on: November 02, 2023, 03:25:11 PM »
Just wondering if you shoot the end of the bale or the side. What is the best material, straw alfalfa, corn stocks? What is the cost per bale, how long do they last if wrapped in plastic. I go thru a lot of targets with my field points. Thanks

In my experience not dense enough for everyday practice.  A judo now and then into an old bale where I used to hunt was a good warm up as I walked into my hunting area.

We had big round grass bales where we lived for years. A big bale can be pretty dense and last quite a while.Field points can disappear if you shoot them in the end of the bale, but they don’t usually. These bales are great for broadhead practice, but not if they’re going to feed cattle. I miss having them around.

Its my favorite target if you can hit one at 80 yards your going to be good at 15 . I shoot at the sides, sometimes your arrow will disappear shooting at the ends. I like grass bales the best . I dont shoot broadheads they may pull off when you extract the arrow I wouldn't want a cow to git a broadhead in its mouth .

Alfalfa bales are fun at various ranges, long and short. My longest probably was about 80 yards. Then sometimes just before walking into my stand at various shorter  yards.

They are denser on the side than the ends, so flip it up on an end and cover the top to keep the rain out and you have the same type of target surface from any direction.
Lefties are the only ones who hold the bow in the right hand.

Been doing it that way for about 15 years, looks like maybe you have too.

I really like the compressed bales available at Tractor Supply.  They already come wrapped in plastic and they stop an arrow really well. I think the last one I bought was about $15. They last a good while too.

Kind of a bale. Our trad club has a club member that owns a nice parcel of land in a good location between Edmonton and Calgary. We have a lot of our 3D shoots there. Free camping, food etc.

He recently got a bunch or these oil field "Pigs" free. They are dense foam used to test/clean pipelines.

I'm hoping to bring one home next year. They work awesome for Broadheads too
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

My buddies and I have been shooting those foam pigs for several years. We spray paint animal targets on them. They’re great. They’ll stop arrows from heavy bows and they last for years. In fact, we haven’t worn one out yet. You have to tie them to something to keep them from blowing away in a strong wind. I brought a couple of smaller ones home a couple of years ago. I wasn’t sure if I could bring the big ones back across the border.
