DIY Digital Shaft/Arrow Spine Meter
« on: November 20, 2023, 05:55:04 AM »
This thread will be a pictorial of sorts on building a device that will be extremely beneficial for wood arrow shooters/builders, and the resulting meter will work just as well for carbon, aluminum, and glass shafts/arrows, too.

Getting it together.

A scrap pine board that's 3/4" x 5" x 30" ($0), the digital indicator ($23), a pair of hooks ($3), the accessory back plate that comes with the indicator, a 10-24 1/4"x3" bolt with washers and nut for attaching the indicator ($2), a plastic vitamin pill container that's filled with shotugn shot that has a total weight of 2lbs ($0). Just need to add a pair of wood braces that will hold the indicator, more on that later. That big ol' knot in the pine board has been stabilized with CYA glue.  ;)

Besides the 2lb weight, the essence of the spine meter itself - 3/4" pine board, a pair of wood blocks glued on to hold the indicator, the indicator opened up to show it's plunger spring is unhooked and its tip unscrewed, a 10-24 1/4" x 3" bolt with nut and washers to attach the indicator, the shaft/arrow holding hooks, a pair of 2" screws to hang the meter.

A closer look at the inside of the indicator and its unhooked plunger spring.

Components attached to the board.  The hooks are screwed in or out in order to center the indicator's plunger on the center of the shaft/arrow - in this case an 11/32" x 32" Douglas fir shaft.  The meter is turned on and set to read in decimal inches.

The 2lb weight is hung close to the plunger and a reading is take of the shaft's static spine.

I don't need two, so it's getting stained and clear coated, then going up on the TG Classifieds for cheap.  :wavey:

My gauge should be delivered today, I’m going to try whipping one of these up as I found about four dozen wood arrows shoved in a box in my basement I forgot I had and I don’t know what any of the spines are,

I will let you know how it worked out for me
