Tuning a with junior archer...
« on: May 03, 2024, 11:26:09 PM »
Hey gang! Its been a journey since the archery expo at my bale! My 10yr old daughter and I have been at it with her new Shrew all spring. Its a 25# reflex\deflex and at the beginning I checked her draw, and bought a dozen 4mm 1150 spine carbon arrows as my best calculation came up with. We fletched a couple and off to the backyard with her new bow! She shot and hunted with a 62"-25# last year and struggled in the blind and through the brush with it..never complained.. And was always up to shoot. So when I went with her to the TCATS and Expo I had it in mind to see what we could get that was a bit handier size for her. The little Shrewster is 52" and very nimble, and I knew it might be a bit of work for us both to get her settled in with such a short\ light bow. So after the first evening of tail wagging jumping arrows I ordered a few 1400spine arrows and once they arrived we fletched them up and went back to the bale, they flew better but still a bit stiff. Repeat process on some 1600spine and voila! Fun fun fun! Then as the weeks progressed the 1600s started showing weak as her form and draw started to settle in to the new bow. Back down to the 1400s and clean shooting again! Another month goes by, and the 1400s start showing weak. Back to the 1150s with clean nice flight.. Another month..time to bareshaft. Slowly 1\8"-3\16" cut at a time on the 1150s bareshaft shot after bareshaft shot..showing her the nock changes each time..then she wants to cut em herself..so I get her all setup with the Dremel cutoff wheel and she's doin it herself!  It was so neat to see her finally getting those little 4mm shafts flying like darts with no fletchings!
