300gr Glue on Broadheads
« on: May 04, 2024, 11:56:18 PM »
What's available out there these days?
Abowyer- Has a 300gr glue on brown bear. Perhaps a bit wider (1 7/16") and thinner steel than I'd prefer for my intended use.

Tuffhead- 300gr glue on, I have a couple of these and they are what I based this arrow build upon but now they are unavailable. I like the width, thickness and the design how the ferrule extends to the tip. Not relying on the thickness of the blade only.

What else is out there?
Thick fog slowly lifts
Jagged peaks and hairy beast
Food for soul and body.

Border black douglas recurve 70# and 58# HEX6 BB2 limbs

Not a 300 grainer, but probably a viable option. They are a terrific big game broadhead.......if you can find 'em........Blowed if I can though  :dunno:

In the past I've paired them with 100 grain woody-weights on heavy wooden arrows (almost 1100 grains all up, from my 75lb longbow) and used them on Water Buffalo, with excellent results too.

Each of my Buffalo only ever required a single one through both lungs and across the top of the heart, and each one was down in 15 to 20 seconds. Each time the broadhead was either hanging out the off-side, or driven into the lower part of the off-side shoulder blade.

I reckon they're a great broadhead for big heavy game. Actually they would still be my go-to broadhead should the opportunity to hunt those big buggers ever come my way again

Sorry Clint, that was a bit long winded, but if you can find them, I reckon the 235 grain Grizzly's and woody-weights could be a very good option....

Good hunting to you all.

I've noticed that glue-on heads, and particularly heavy ones,(190 grs +) are getting harder to find.

Yes, everything seems to be trending to screw in's these days.

There is a lot to be said about the weight versatility of glue ons and adapters.

With screw ins the dimensions usually change with different weights. I sucks to find the size BH you want only to find it not available in the weight you want.

Yes, heavy glue ons are becoming harder and harder to find. Certainly not the wide choice of specs

Actually, the 185 grain Grizzly had pretty much the same cutting width as the Tuffhead, and it's hell for stout too at 80 thou thick. That and a 125 grain Woody-weight would put it right on 310 grains. I've got a spare pack of the 185 grain Grizzly's and I reckon I could no doubt find enough 125 grain Woody-weights for you to have a play with if you'd like Clint

I will say I do not think there is a better built single bevel head than the ABowyer. just .02

Thanks A Lex but I gave some 185gr Grizzlies already. I have them weighted to 250gr on screw in adapters for my normal setup. The blade thickness on them is .055" not .08" like the 300gr tuffhead. The 235gr Kodiak grizzly may be an option. I would have to increase the insert weight to account for the difference to the tuffhead. The Abowyer 300gr just seems a bit wide at 1 7/16". The grizzly ferrule looks to be longer too. The tuffhead ferrule went right to the tip which I liked a lot.

The 3rivers caiman broad head comes in a single bevel or double bevel 1-1/16” cut from 160-275. Blades are 0.75 and blade length is 2-5/8”. $50 for a 3 pack.

Not a glue on, but look at the new 400g Abowyer Moose. They are screw in single bevels and are a whopping 0.125” thick. Mike made them up at my request. Just got my first order, they are wicked.

Just curious, why do you need that much weight?

I’m going for moose and wanted FOC.  They fly well and are point on at 35-40 (depending on how much I cover the target) I know it isn’t required, but I figured I’d play the odds to my favor. 700ish grains out of my 64# recurve.

If I were looking to do what you are, I’d pry use a Woodyweight 100 or 125 grain plus a 200 grain broadhead. There are just more options in the 200 grain class, and I’ve always noticed better arrow flight when relying on inserts or adapters for weight. The cutthroat 190 grain broadhead would be a good choice. I believe the cutthroats are pry the best available glue-on heads made.

Woody weights are an option, and I used them for some "just a smidgeon too short" and too stiff wood arrows.  The WW (75 grain) and 190 grain field point added the length and weight needed to target shoot with these arrows.  I could maybe put a broadhead on there. (?)  Or maybe put two 50 grain WW in tandem and then a broadhead. (?)
