First Selfbow Kill
« on: May 20, 2024, 03:24:28 PM »
Shot this big dude on 4/29 just a couple days before leaving MI for Tennessee to spend a few days at the Classic. I got settled into my blind and immediately heard gobbles behind and to the left of me. I shook out a couple weak gobbles in response and yelped a couple times on my box call and here he came from out in front of me across a big meadow, diagonally from the opposite side treeline. He stopped at about 8 yards conveniently in front of the only open window without mesh and I sent one through the base of his neck and out his back end. He dropped and flopped right there on the spot. I let him lay while I composed myself and another big boy came in and attacked him, standing on his back, picking up his head and dropping it, etc...pretty savage display of nature right there in front of me. I then noticed a bunch more hens and toms/jakes in the field that I watched for 30 minutes. All while a steady rain came down. Anyway, here's a pic or three. Oh, 11.5" beard and 1.25" spurs.

Thanks guys. I made this bow and another right after figuring to gift the one that shot the best to my brother in law. He's a C bow guy but is genuinely interested in seeing the bows I make and has expressed a desire to someday make his own selfbow. He and my little sis are also kind enough to let me hunt their 10 acres five minutes from my house.   :goldtooth:

He also always gives me cool stuff for free when my sister makes him clean out the pole barn. Here's a few pics of the bow. It had his name on it the whole time I hunted the property, I shot and just handled the bow around him numerous times and he never noticed  :biglaugh:
I was glad to hand it over with some good mojo on it.

The name "Limber Timber" just sounded cool when it popped in my head, and I realized after I scribed it that Tim was his late brother's name. We share a bond over both losing a brother too soon as well as just being good buddies.

Beautiful bow, beautiful gobbler and an even cooler gift for your brother in law.

Enjoyed your story.  Thanks for sharing.  Very nice looking bow that has mojo.

Congratulation!

The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.
Undomesticated, this was by far the easiest one I've ever had. The day before and this day were rainy and chilly and I had the most action I've experienced in years. It all just came together perfectly. Only took about 15 years of chasing them with a bow! Glad it was with one I made.  :bigsmyl:
