VPA 300 grain 3 blade 1.5" cut

Searched all around the Internet for some info/reviews on VPA's 300 grain 3 blade with the 1.5" cut without any luck. Anyone around here have any experience with this head?

is that the big jim head? vpa makes fine broadheads  if you have enough bow to push that big blade it will work great.

VPA did start making that head for Big Jim.  Jim is bear hunting, he might chime in when he returns.

My last batch I got I had to call VPA directly to purchase.   They are easy to sharpen and get to fly.

ESP, what all have you killed with them?  I love their other heads in the 1.25 cut width.

I guess I should have also included in my first initial post is that I'm not concerned with the structural integrity of the head or anything like that. My question is mostly for the guys that are using them, what your bow/arrow setup is like and what are the results ( i.e. penetration) you are seeing using them on live (hopefully now dead) critters? I'm fairly new to the traditional side of archery. I've always been a big fan of big holes using modern archery equipment. So just trying to get some real world info/experience from others to gauge which route to go down.

Tell us your draw lenght, bow weight, and arrow weight. AND! what you plan on shooting/hunting with that set up.

Well if you are interested in results using big 3 blades…the original Snuffers were 1 1/2 inch 3 blades. For new guys that don’t know what Snuffers were imagine a vented version of the head you are asking about.  Personally used em on critters from javelina sized to AK bull moose, in US, African animals etc. Rough, rough estimate….. 50 lb(ish) traditional bow good with these heads for deer, black bears, pigs etc. Elk, caribou sized 55lb (ish).  For the biggest stuff in North America 60-65 lb (ish) bow. Matched arrows in reasonable weights, no concerns at all with penetration unless you crap the bed totally on shot placement. Just my 2c from 40 yrs experience shooting big 3 blades from traditional bows.

First off let me say, I appreciate everyone's time and input.

Even though I've never personally used a snuffer, I am aware of what they are. It's actually the reason I'm wondering about the 1.5" cut VPAs.  I've heard many people talk about the big cut Rothhaar snuffers and the VPA version is the only head that's equivalent of one that I know of that's manufactured these days.

Mostly would be hunting Wisconsin whitetails.

As for equipment:

R/D longbow
55@28" I draw 27.5".
Arrows are 670 grains total weight.

Toelke Chinook
45@27" I draw 27.5".
Arrows are 570 grains total weight.

OK, now we are getting somewhere.  What weight head are you shooting now on those arrows stated above?

I killed a doe, raccoon and 2 opossums.  It would be my choice for bear.  I have a close to 32” draw length;as long as I have a heavy arrow penetration is not an issue.

If I could still find some of the original 1 1/2 sniffers I would buy them a little more versatile in weight with adapters

300 grain field points on both setups. Arrows fly well and bare shaft tune when I do my job.

I wouldn't hesitate using that set up with those heads.  55#s and just over 12 GPP.

The other set up might work, but I'd be worried about the weight of the bow at full draw not giving the arrow enough speed and momentum.  I don't know if the 250 grain 1.25 inch would fly out of the lighter bow with the same arrows or not, but that would be a better head for that bow IMO.

I'd have to leave my arrows a little longer to get 250 up front to fly well. I'm happy where I'm at in my tuning process so I'd rather keep shooting 300.

They do make a 300 grain 1.25" 3 blade. Which was my first initial choice as it's kind of right in the middle of both worlds (penetration vs big cut). Just didn't know how much a 1/4" would change things with traditional equipment.

Perfect, I think you would be happy with the results of the 300 at 1.25 with either set up.

Those bows at the weights listed would have enough juice to push the large heads.

My favorite turkey head, if I am not using a DCAP.  Would also make a great head for bear, but I almost never use that heavy of a broadhead.  Turkey that I have killed with that head have usually been with bows drawn a little over 29" and a little over 53#.

I've got 1 1/4" 300 gr screw in, but I'd like to try some 1 1/2" 300 gr glue on heads.  I've used 190 and 200 grain VPA with good success.
