I need to bring WHAT???
« on: July 20, 2024, 10:38:54 AM »
Just a few things, as I think of the, that you might want to bring along. Feel free to add anything you can think of....

Binos - No matter what anyone tells you, you need binos. Not just for seeing the animals, but determining which way they are going from 200 to 600 yards out in some places.

Pruning shears Hand held.

Large Pruning/loppers shears if driving, if flying, there is a pare at the pruning shed you can use when the occasion arises, or to prune out a hide if need be.  Just remember, these must be returned to the shed as soon as you are done.  These are reserved for the Skinning shed.

Your favorite hunting chair, that does not latch to a tree if driving. If flying, we can snag you a chair out of any of the 100 towers on the properties.

Work glove for crawling on the ground, and some very minimal protection from the real spikes on the Mesquite and Cactus.

Windicator - These are good if you are like me and can't keep up with stuff.  You can put one in your pack, one in your pocket, in your suitcase, bow case, arrow case, etc. etc.  They come in a pack of 5.  I have an order on the way and I will report back how they work as I've never used this type before.

Real leather boots, no mesh anywhere, and rubber boots will get destroyed, just ask RI Red. You can wear mesh if you like, but you will have to be slow and careful when venturing into the land of daggers and needles.

Camp shoes - It's night to have a comfy and supporting shoe to wear around camp.  Crocks aren't advised as more than one hunter got jabbed by just stepping out of the truck upon arrival.

Green or Red head Lamp or bow light.  You can get a strap on bow light from Eagles Flight and they are not expensive.  If your Eagle Flight comes with a white light, you can use a green or red permanent sharpy on the lens. Also, I have used a Green or Red head lamp that I adjust for night hunting to see where I'm looking while drawing. I can remove my colored lens to reveal white for tracking if need be.

If you like a side or back quiver but you have a bow quiver, you might want to bring it as a back up. Last year one hunter posted after the hunt that he wished he would have brought is bow quiver.  I wish he would have told me while I was there as I had two with me AND somehow he missed that we had a bow quiver from Eagles Flight for anyone to use.

Fanny packs are good.  You might want to carry a few necessary items, but water for sure, along with knife, marking ribbon, sharpener, flashlight, hand shears.....

Sunblock or Hat - Not much shade in TX that time of year as the leaves have gone from most trees so it can be hard to get completely out of the sun.  Ball caps work pretty good, but still need sunblock for ears and neck, and back of hands. These work well and you can put your ball cap other the hood as they are that thin.  Thanks for Blake last year for giving me one as I saw a need for this immediately!!!  I will still wear my Predator over it as well.  They are cheap. No need to spend $100 for  one.

Tweezers and Extra Shaver Head - Tweezers for pulling out mini spikes and the extra shaver head will be designated for shaving off what you cant tweeze.

You might want to add knee pads to that list as well…Ken and I have been using military surplus knee pads..helps turn the thorns..and it’s a lot easier on you knees when you have to kneel behind a clump of prickly pear waiting for the javis to get closer..and a plus if you have to crawl….

I assume snake boots are not necessary this time of year?

I saw a big rattler 2 years ago hunting the second week. Ken and I use our snake boots but a lot of the guys just use regular leather boots. I like the snake boots because they turn a lot of cactus thorns. They can get hot though….

Dave, we have never seen a snake since we've been doing this as far as I can remember. And, I have crawled all in the bush all those hunts more than anyone.

Your preference.  :campfire:

Thanks guys,

It looks like I can pick up some gators that are snake proof fairly reasonable from Dan’s.  I will probably bring them and if people see activity I have them.  Should probably have a pair for future hunts anyway.

Chaps would be too noisy to hunt with, but they might be nice to throw on if you needed to blood trail through the cactus and mesquite.

What Blake said. Might need polar tech in the am till about 10, then short sleeves in the afternoon is the norm if you want to hunt in short sleeves.

Dave: I just saw your question about snake gaiters or snake boots. I wear gaiters all the time there because it reduces the thorns I have to pull out of my lower legs by 100%. The prickly pear and pencil cactus thorns will drive you crazy if you let them. They go through heavy clothing and embed in your legs. Gaiters keep them out.

I wouldn’t worry about the thorns too much, they will eventually work their way out over the next 6 months or so. 😁
