Groundhogs, in the trees, and Mosquitos!
« on: July 26, 2024, 10:14:39 AM »
Been hunting a particular groundhog!
He's  not cooperating. I first spotted in a small tree, back early May, as I was JRB SRT Tree Climbing, a large maple.
So, setting up to access a tree, Tuesday afternoon, and noticed the swarm of skitters around me.
I have a Thermacel and use alot when squirrel hunting, what are you using?
Anything new out there!

I use a thermacell when hog hunting in the SC swamps and it was a life saver for a Canada bear hunt.  If there’s anything better out there I sure haven’t heard of it.  Luckily, mosquitoes have not been much of a problem since moving to the mountains so I don’t use the thermacell when hunting locally.

I bought a thermacell for dealing with the mosquitoes in the U.P. during the summer. I never expected it to work as well as it did, but I was very happy with it! I'm sure there's other options out there, but I've never had a reason to change.

I treat my clothes with Permethrin and put a couple of drops, repeat a couple of drops of 100% deet on the inside of my wrist, rub together then on my neck, back of my hands, my face etc... Mosquitos nor are any kind of bugs are a problem.

I remember making a post here in the early 2000s that these guys were going to make a killing because they worked so well.  Haven't used deet in over 20 years.

Thermacell.

Yes, the Thermacell is the ticket!
Last, time I had to use it, took it wade fishing for smallmouth. Happy it was in my fannypack!
Several times I've seen a groundhog in a Mulberry tree, eating ripe berries!

I’ve heard of guys using two thermacells at a time. One works fine for me.
I remember reading about them when they first came out , probably right here on TG . Bought the first one I ever saw. I was in a hunt club at the time and the guys there kept telling me the deer would smell it. My reply was “ if they are down wind they’re going to smell me anyway. And if I’m swatting skeeters they gonna see me”

MCNSC, ha!  Matt Schuster once said this around a campfire....

"I had a guy tell me he heard that the smoke from a Thermacell could cause cancer, so I told him - Fine then I'll die with no mosquito bites."

That's funny!
He must be from California, everything there causes cancer.
Notice they don't say you'll Die from cancer?
