St. Jude's Auction... info please
« on: May 21, 2008, 12:00:00 AM »
I see all the references to this, and the thread with pix of items donated, but I haven't found any one spot with the complete basic info... how you donate, how the auction works, etc.   Can someone steer me?

thanks

That is a good thread for everyone to read this week.  Get all the details now, because when the buzzer goes off next Tuesday it will be fast and furious!  :readit:

Also, there is still time to get your listings of donated items posted!

Can someone explain why all the forums start on the same day but end on different days. I can see good reason for staggering the finish, so the mods have time to log the results. But it seems to me that items in the early forums are not getting their full bidding potential. If we want to raise money for these kids, then we need to let all the items raise as much as possible.

UK...the staggaring has nothing to do with the work of the mods...except it creates more.....

Seems lots of people missed this the 1st go round, and even the 2nd go round...So,...here it is again......

""Had some chat and great input from Mitch Walker on the Paradise Hunt about how to get to $100,000 on the next auction.

I've kicked around his idea, and came up with a thought myself on how to go about it....gonna try and explain this the best I can, and I'd like to have some of ya'll input as to how you think it would work. I ran it by Doug this morning, and I think we are off to a good start.

OK...1st we make an 'Entry Forum' where all entries are entered, and a strong plea for all items to be entered before the auction opens. This will be open for listings by all members.

We create Auction Forum 1, Auction Forum 2, Auction Forum 3, and Auction Forum 4 that are all separate, and all have the same start date, but have a different end date. Auction Forum 1 will end, and a day later 2, and a day later 3, and a day later 4.

These will be a read only forums till its time to turn them on. Doug and I will move listings from the Entry Forum as they come in to the other 4 forums as we see fit, so that each forum carries a few of the big ticket items.....take for instance hunts...each forum would have at least one hunt, and then we'd start back over....same with other big ticket items...and separate knives, arrows, bows in the 4 forums.

This way if someone gets out bid on a hunt lets say, they can bid on another one the next day. Same with other items. This will allow folks to still have a chance donate even if they loose out on a particular item.

This will also allow those that have a set amount to actually get to donate again and again instead of loosing out on the single day as before.""

I hope that explains it   :wavey:

There are several reasons. It will make a crashing of the server at the end of an auction less likely by having the items split up. It will increase the ability of folks to actually bid on items, when everything closed at the same time if you were going hard at one item and lost you were done, this time you will have opportunity to bid on other items. This should also actually increase the money the kids get.

Thanks Terry and David for the explanation. I just think it limits what the items in the first forum can raise, and yes I have an item in forum 1. It's a low value item but I'd like it to raise as much as it can.
Terry, with that in mind I'd like to donate three more if you can spread them out.

UK...yes, we can spread them out.

Here's the deal...if an item runs for 2 more days, it may or may not bring but so much, and those bidding had a set amoung they are going to spend, or bid, and they will no doubt get their bid in whether its 3 days or 5,,,,

However, if there are 7 guys seriously bidding on one of the hog hunts that closes on one day...only ONE of those guys can win, and there are 6 guys that can bid on the hog hunt that closed the next day instead of all 6 not being able to donate because the auction all closed at once.

Also, of someone wants the item you donated,...and they REALLY want it, it don't really matter if it closes after 4 days or 6.
If I see a knife that I just gotta have in forum one....I'm going to bid on it high the last day...when ever that day is.

When it all closes down at once...there's a LOT of bid money left on the table...much more so than what ever 'might' be limited on forum one.

FWIW - when it (The New Plan) first was rolled out , I wondered. However, the more I've seen of it getting set up and spread around (and talked about) the more convinced i have become that it is going to work, not only well, but better than in past years. IMH(umble)O

After a few years "experience" with this Auction we tweek it a little here and a little there each year hoping to maximize the income. I think this will sure eze the crunch at the end and like T said allow the money flow a little smoother  ;)   Maybe even not crash the system in the last 30 minutes...  ;)

Thanks a bunch everybody for all the great stuff and help!!

My friend and bowyering mentor, Mike Brooks, Ret'd USN, is going to be gone during the auction but he called me after I got back from the Baltimore Shoot. He is bringing me a wood bow (gonna be a good hunter) he finished up last night. He has asked me to take pics and post the offering for him (and the kids). Believe me, it is my honor and I can hardly wait. I should have it up by tomorrow.
