Printer Paper Licenses...??
« on: August 07, 2024, 01:09:27 PM »
Just wondering? How many states have their sporting licenses printed on regular paper??

My son Tyler got his lifetime license tags in the mail yesterday. We were very surprised to find that they are now being printed on regular computer paper. According to the NYSDEC, "MANY" states are switching to paper printed licenses.

Just curious "HOW" many...??  :dunno:

Oregon went there several years ago, if you pack them in your wallet they become unreadable.

Oregon got smart and went with printed license or electronic license on your phone, the vendors that sell licenses provide paper and printer and get no compensation from ODFW.  In the past they supplied the thermal printers and paper.  $

Lifetime I would have expected to be at least laminated. My lifetime hunting and fishing license from AZ is a plastic credit card type. Course I got it almost 10 years ago.

It’s ridiculous. Imagine if it’s raining. How are you supposed to fill out the tag? Than try dragging a deer with it attached while wet through any cover. It’s all good though. A CO told me we could drag to a camp, truck, house than attach it. If I get to truck, attach it in rain what’s the chance it makes it home. Guess that’s easy, just buy a hunt truck with a cap?
Even in dry weather how is a paper tag supposed to stay attached in the wind of a pickup?
I’ve got some pretty solid zip type pouches with a couple holes. They’re for range tags but they’d prob work with zip ties.
Why do we have to think so hard to tag an animal? It it was money saving I’d gladly have paid an extra buck or two for the opportunity at durable carcass tags

These are the tags I thought of. I’d zip tag in, zip tie to horn or leg, than wrap it around that and double zip tie that

Ya, I got mine yesterday, then printed my DMP tags (on paper). We can just keep them in a one quart zip lock freezer bag in our pocket or pack, maybe. I will bring a couple extras bags and put a filled out tag in one and try to zip tie it to the antler. Nothing stopping people from printing “extra tags” though…..
 I suppose this is progress.

According to the DEC, Albany had trouble finding a source for the thermal vinyl rolls for the printers.  Which is a load of BS.  Also, as part of this new circus, backtags are longer necessary to be worn.  With nearly 1 million license holders, you'd think that they could do better.

Imagine a paper back tag if it had to be worn all season? It’d never last. Prob why they decided not to makes us wear it

Not only are they paper in Wisconsin, we have to print them ourselves.  It's been that way for several years.

My biggest issue (other than people printing "extra tags")  :readit:

Is that NYSDEC regulations state that you must fill out your tag immediatly after kill.
Ever try to write on wet paper? What do you lean on? Everything is wet, If your hands are wet, the tags get wet before you even get started! I'm not one to break the rules, but I think I'll just wait until I reach camp, or my truck.
Take my chances and fight the ticket? The ticket the EnCon officer submits to the court will be in perfect shape, He sat in a nice dry truck and filled it out. I'll just point that out to the judge... :readit:

Tom, Tyler's lifetime license actually is a plastic card. They mail his tags to him every year.

to me, it's just another disservice to the hunters of NYS.  They collect millions from license sales, then millions more from Pittman-Robinson excise taxes, and we have one of the worst managed game agencies in the Nation.  Yet they found the resources and the time to create an Environmental Judiciary Council to promote DEI and Civil Rights within the DEC.  More tax payer dollars wasted on nonsense.

I purchased my NY license yesterday at the local sporting goods store. I received an email from the DEC with a copy of my license, so I can print out lost or destroyed tags which is convenient. For the 97$ my hunting and fishing licenses cost I sure get my moneys worth. I feel lucky I have 30k acres of hunting areas within a 30 minute drive. A good portion is bow hunting only.

We’ll have to get over it…in a very short time there will be no “printed” licenses in any state. Just the way the world is moving.

Al, Have to agree with you!! A lot of waste and mismanagement in NY!!
I guess the only positive thing is... All of the fine money collected goes to the local courts, not the state.

But I also have to agree with Glen! NY has some awesome hunting and fishing!!!
After near (very near lol) 64 years, I know NY like the back of my hand. I can go anywhere in the state and catch a variety of fish, and a variety of game. Northern and Southern zone big and small game seasons, spread out over a period of about 5 months!! Also btw, I'm too dang old to move somewhere and accumulate that knowledge again.

We print our own license in ND but the tags are sent later by the G&F. I like printing my own license its easy and I dont have to go to town to have it done and its immediate .

I’m old enough to have a plastic lifetime Oklahoma hunting license from 1994. I haven’t carried it on me in a long time. Both Texas where I reside and Oklahoma where I still hunt have smartphone apps that pull your license up. No need to have anything other than your phone and drivers license on you. If you’re going where you don’t have a signal, then take a screen shot. If you don’t like smartphones, printer paper it is.

What James said, yet phones can go dead in several ways, battery, no signal, get drowned, plain old give out.

You can always have your paper laminated. I would print out another copy and do two while I was at it.

Some of the out of state hunts that I do, they email you your license and you print it out yourself. I just run it through a laminator or cover it in packing tape. It's not a big deal to do. Takes a couple minutes of my time.
