Arsinal Of Light Weight Bows I Can Shoot
« on: August 17, 2024, 03:01:54 PM »
Getting old sucks...But at least I have been able to Reduce Weight on 26 bows so far that I can still shoot at 30 to 33 pounds @28. They are all different...longbows, recurves, selfbows, 3 piece, and bowbolts. So at 78+ I'm still having fun shooting a bunch of my old bows...tippit

Thats encouraging, I'm hoping to be able to shoot my 35# Super Griz by this October.

I hear you tippit, be 79 in a week or so. I still can shoot my 55# R/D LB but recurves are out. 45#’s is my new preference. So, excuse for new bows and arrows

That's great, Jeff. You have the knowhow to keep reducing those bows as needed. Keep having fun.

How many pounds have most of them been reduced - what is the most pounds you have taken off?

Burnsie,
Most of these light weight bows have been reduced 2 times. Starting in the mid 50 pounds to 40 pounds. Now even 40#@28 is too heavy for me. So I reduced these 40 pound bows to 30/33 pounds @28. The most I've reduced a bow was 30 pounds. You have to remember that a 30pound bow does nor need the amount of glass backing that a 55 pound bow needs...tippit

I enjoyed your threads back in the day when you reduced a bunch of really nice bows down to 40#.  It gave me a lot of confidence to start tinkering with some of mine.  Not enough to tinker with bows as valuable as the ones you modified though  :biglaugh:

ever have any failures along the way?

Two...one was carbon fiber backed and the carbon fiber splintered. The other was the limb collapsing on my tillering jig. I always stress a finished bow to 36 inch pull. If it is going to break, I want to see it break in the jig not my hand. I have reduced 50 to 60 bows without any problems. Again these are just my bows.
