Why I hate hunting shows
« on: September 16, 2024, 11:06:10 AM »
Dish runs two free hunting channels in September.   I keep trying to watch but end up frustrated.   Nearly a non-stop commercial.  But how do you shoot a deer with a compound and only get partial penetratio ?
Rhetorical, I know.
Once in a while I see pass-throughs.
Heck, my 46# recurve pushes a 3 blade Snuffer through the rib cage.
I used to shoot compounds and killed a bunch.  Always with fixed blades and always pass-through.
I will.end .my rant now.

I was watching naked and afraid yesterday. There was a contestant parading around with a bow with like a 3” brace height. You would think he would try to educate himself a little before he started shooting at game

I gave up watching "hunting shows" years ago when they started becoming "shooting shows" five minutes of footage with 25 minutes of commercials.  Haven't missed it....

I was channel surfing and came across Fred Elicher.  The only thing I saw was his promotion of the new riser from Bear which bears his name.

I got rid of my satellite a few years ago so haven't had access to hunting shows for quite a while, but even then I didn't watch them. "Hunters" doing stupid stuff, nothing but infomercials, bad shots, etc.............  I couldn't stand to watch any of it.

The only hunting DVD videos I watch are Fred Bear, the Wensels, Paul Brunner, Bob Kirschner, and the ones Roger Rothhaar are in. I have no interest in the TV hunting shows.

I watch Youtube videos instead of hunting shows these days.

Years ago, a friend called it "Hunting Porn".  I can't argue with that!  Even a minute or two is more than I can take.

I had a subscription to "My Outdoor TV" and I just cancelled it after I realized I hadn't watched anything in over 6 months.  The only show I liked was Wild Fed by Daniel Vitalis but it was so radically different than 99% of the content that it sort of confirmed my decision to leave.  I think he moved his show elsewhere too.

I think what did it for me was trying to get away from the hunting-porn shows and searched for muzzeloader content, but the first show I watched was killing 5 bucks in 25 minutes with no time at all devoted to technique or the land around them or anything - it was really gross.  The Hunting Public or Jason Samkowiak or Robert Carter on YouTube is the right speed for me.  -K

Most offer little content other than their sponsor's products.  Thank God that I had my ... with me.  I wore ... under my ... jacket, etc...  Also the "smoked him" lines are a real put off to me.

And then there was video years ago of Jimmy Houston on a whitetail "hunt".  It was revealed from another camera man, who was filming the wide shots of Jimmy and his camera man in a tree, that it was a canned hunt.  There were men on the ground pushing the deer to him, and the wide shot caught not just them, but also the high fence.  Total turn off, and that was pretty much it for me.

Jason and Robert's YouTube channels are two of the best out there right now. Both full of knowledge on traditional gear and woodsmanship

The Push Archery had a new one up yesterday on YouTube called The Bowhunters of ETAR.  One is a fellow NY'er Curt "Guru" Cabrera.

Probably just a character flaw, but watching someone else hunt or fish for entertainment ranges somewhere between watching paint dry and a root canal.

These shows are not hunting shows, they are half hour advertisements with a couple kill shots thrown in to keep guys watching. Years ago, I got sick of all the fist pumping bodily shaking and intense whispering after the shot about how they smoked that joker and gave him a parking ticket etc etc. Throw in the shooter buck and the hit list, cull buck and all that crap it just makes me want to puke. No wonder anti-hunters hate us. Jim Shockey was the only one I could stand to watch but I got rid of Cable TV so...

Oh, but I'm sure that everyone loves the whispering...

Another reason why I very rarely watch - I absolutely can't stand the whispering.

If they're supposed to be quiet why the heck don't they just shut up!
May your next adventure lighten your heart, test your spirit, and nourish your soul.

I canceled my cable about 15yr ago..... I always had a hard time with hunting shows.
I enjoyed Tred Barta (RIP) when I was a kid.....as long as i kept the volume very low, his hype was too much for Sunday morning TV at Nana's house.
I'll pull up some of the meat eater stuff every now and then. I'm still a chef at heart despite changing careers. I enjoy how he designates so much time to the actual preparation of game meat.

They are remarkably deceiving and have reinforced the current mindset of reward over effort and experience.  I have been watching them less and less over the years,  not actually watching the manufactured "hunting " part and just trying to enjoy the scenery.  At that, they deliver a message that does not make me want to enjoy the outdoors and the hunting "experience".  The compound bow has almost become an "old timer's game" and the crossbow doesn't get a blink with the more recent addition of the shooting stand and the children under 10 years of age, the numerous game cameras all monitored from a distance, and bucks that have names.  It is just a different game altogether. A half an hour to show the story of the plan, travel, discussion and review of photos of the target buck ,setup, waiting in anticipation, the shot and recovery all mixed in with the product endorsements leaves out most of the reason that used to be  considered the emotional and psychological benefits of 'going hunting".  Honestly, the shows and what they profess is just boring.  Sadly, this also takes away from hunting any moral justification.   We just changed over to You Tube TV with a significant drop in price.  No hunting shows here.   I really won't miss them.
