Carbon Legacy White Cap Dip Removal?
« on: November 14, 2024, 01:09:52 PM »
Simply for info purposes ..... I did a little experiment the other day with a carbon legacy shaft that I've shot probably a million times and could use a re fletch.  I thought to myself,  let's see how easy the white dip comes off ....... so,  I started with acetone.   No Go!  The Easton logo came off,  but that's all.  Didn't phase that white dip one bit.  Next,  I tried a KleanStrip stripper that in my previous experience,  eats just about any finish one would think to spray it on I suppose.   No Go!  Amazed at that point,  I wiped the shaft and hit it again with the KleanStrip ...... No Go again!  It did seem to soften the white dip paint a bit,  but would still require a scraping tool and lots of time to remove.   I did do that a bit,  and noticed that the surface under that white dip is not the same as the rest of the shaft.  It has been scored or surface prepped it seems to make a rougher surface for the paint to adhere.  You can see the texture of the carbon  material in what's present of a wood grain finish.
Bad news,  this white dip would be miserable/impossible to remove should you want to do that.  Good news,  Easton did a bomb proof dipping job on those shafts and barring you scraping it with a razor blade,  it's not coming off your shafts.
I do wish they made these without the white cap dip  :knothead:

I don't have any those but would imagine the white is going to be built into the arrow. I think you are going to be out numbered  wanting to get rid of the white. That is a huge time saver! There are plenty of non white shafts to choose from.

Have you tried heat. If it is a wrap and not a dip heat might work.
I know nothing about carbon shafts but if you remove the finish is it possible that carbon fibers would be exposed and maybe loosened. Resealing might be necessary.

The wood grain and white cap is all one piece.

So, I wonder if anyone here has refletched those shafts without screwing up the white finish removing the old fletch and glue? I would bet they use super glue to fletch which is a royal pain to remove.

Wow I was just about to post a question about the white Easton capped carbon shafts myself. Great shafts and tough but has anyone had trouble with feather adhesion with the white caps? Had no issues all year but cold weather and the feathers lifted on 4 of my shafts while hunting! Still took a very nice buck with them but haven't had that happen in years. Was thinking of scraping them myself until I saw this post. Prep with rubbing alcohol fletch tite glue and bitzenburger jig done it this way for years but still had issues?

I have run into a similar issue removing or trying to remove what I thought was cap dip from some Chinese arrows. Also had the same issue with the feathers holding using Fletch-Tite glue. Tried a couple different glues before I got the brilliant idea of removing the cap paint. Well no luck so I emailed the company and their response was not paint but the color was silkscreened on. So I went to fletch tape. For what the arrows (indoor shooting) it works.

I have been shooting these for a bit now,  and I have never glued directly to the cap dip.  I use Onestringer wraps and Platinum....... been using those since Onestringer got on the market with them.  I really like them and the Platinum gives me zero adhesion issues whatsoever!
I don't hate the white dip on the Legacy's generally speaking ......  I do know that for say turkey hunting,  I like to use a much less loud, colorful arrow and fletch.  If Easton made the Legacy without that white dip, I could fletch me up some turkey specific arrows, shooting the same shafts just different color scheme  ...... just 1 example for having the option of White dip or No white dip.
You'd have to get wraps pretty long to cover all that white dip.   Im thinking I might be able to use a more subdued wrap with more subdued fletch and get them on the cresting lathe to hit the last inch and a half or so of exposed white with a nice cresting to pull it all together .................

There is a finish of sorts over the entire shaft to protect the print. The woodgrain and white "wrap" is all in one and what they call a paper. If you don't like it, it is best to cover it. The logo is put on over the finish.  Glue shouldn't affect any of this.
