Traditional Woodsman Sling Pack Gear Dump!
« on: November 19, 2024, 03:08:13 PM »
I had to unload my Sling Pack prototype to measure for packaging, and I thought it might be neat to record everything I have been hauling around this fall. This isn't everything I carry, my pockets have some essentials as well. One thing missing from this pic is a spare bowstring....becasue I recently had to use it thanks to an amazingly sharp broadhead :biglaugh:
Not shown are lunch and a water bottle for all day sits. Pleanty of room in this Sling Pack!

Starting at 12:00 and going clockwise:

    Licenses
    Compass(2)
    Spare tab
Alpaca beanie from Teresa Asbell...crazy warm
    Leupold Lense Pen
    Lighters (2)
Leather gloves for dealing with briars, etc.
    Tracking tape
    Field Dressing Gloves
    Paper Towel
Paracord (I use it constantly, keep a 500 foot spool in my truck)
    Tether for safety harness
    Spare wool jacket (or vest)
    Drag rope
Tourniquet (bleeding to death a mile from your truck is a dumb way to die)
    Knives(2)
    Saw
Lights (I have 2 more in pockets, never enough lights)
    Batteries
Binoculars (It's one or the other, the compact Leupolds have been in use since 1998, the bigger ones are newer....using the big ones usually)

Good gear load out Roger. Can't wait to see the new pack in person. Are you going to be at the Kalamazoo show this year?

Thanks for Sharing! I'm glad to see your tourniquet, I always keep one a small stop the bleed kit. I guess 14 years of Law Enforcement has made me paranoid but a small stop the bleed kit is really underrated and I think all hunters should keep one in their pack.

I try and take a stop the bleed course every year or so. Our sport relies on sharp broadheads, axes, knives....just makes sense.

Thats a good question.

The dimensions are 27" long....5" deep...10" wide at the top and 13" wide at the bottom. Being wool, it's kinda giving and has a natural stretch.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is the second prototype that I am hunting with, and it's a touch larger than the first. I made my 29th hunt of the season last night, and have used the Sling Pack on all but the first 4-5.

I can get enough stuff in the Sling Pack to the point of ridiculous......it has a lot of room. Volume wise, it will haul a full sized jacket and all of the other stuff you could possibly need.

I am sort of a pack hoarder, I have used them for a lot of things. I compete in some tactical land nav/shoot events, and have scenarios where I am putting a 40 pound sand bag in a pack and competing all day with it :o

I have a LOT of back packs, all of high quality.

I say all of that to say this....I have learned this year in my field testing that ANY back pack, no matter the quality, when hunting with a bow.....bothers me. The dual shoulder strap packs seem binding. Getting into the pack requires removal.

I know from experience that quality shoulder straps, chest strap, and/or waist straps on a pack make it more comfortable. I was concerned at first that a Sling Pack style carry method would be uncomfortable. I was glad to be wrong. I have pushed the weight in this Sling Pack to be unrealistic....and it was still comfortable on a long uphill hike to a treestand.

I will still use my back packs. But for hunting with a longbow or recurve, I will be using this Sling Pack for a long time.

Not sure why my response to Frassettor came out like a quote?

Roger… these look amazing! Going to be hard for me to not pick one of these up. Did I see you saying somewhere that you had used them on a Waldrop Pacseat?

Thanks Jimmy.....yeah I have used it with my Waldrop several times. I just sling it on, and tie it down with para cord. Probably cleaner ways to do that.....but I was in a hurry and it worked fine.

I’m interested in the sling pack. Been looking for something like that for a bit. Do you have any videos of it?

My wife bought one for me for Christmas.  I couldn’t resist so I took a peek at it before she wrapped it up.

It looks very well thought out and I think I will get a lot of use out of it with or without a seat. Good amount of storage without being overly bulky. Much more comfortable than my old traditional backpack.

And the added benefit of swiveling it around your body to get something out of the pack without having to take it off is really going to be useful. That  kind of surprised me.

I’m sold on it.

Thanks for the kind words. The inside storage is pretty large....we wanted to be able to stuff a jacket in there without burning up all the space.

You will find your own system, but I put my essentials in the outside pockets...grunt call, limb saw, etc.

Inside I put things I rarely use on the bottom. Since I didi this "gear dump" I have discovered these small canvas pouches I found at the Army surplus store to store and seperate small things (like firestarters, paracord). All of this goes on the bottom, spare coat on top. It works great.

VERY interested in seeing how others load out the Sling Pack!!

Thanks to Roger and Teresa as they are sending a pack to the LTR 2025 Hunts.  The pack will be showcased and gone over by 28 hunters.  It will get plenty of field work over the 3 weeks of hunting.

I recieved this pack yesterday as a Laredo Tusk Roundup showcase item. The pack is very nice.  Longer than a normal sling pack, and it doesn't stick out far from the body, which I like.

We will be hunting with an photographing this pack during the hunt, so stayl tuned...  :campfire:
