Late season can be tough!
« on: January 06, 2025, 08:40:33 AM »
Months of hunting pressure on public can make for tough hunting conditions. I hunted hard for 5 days not seeing a single deer. I went to a drain crossing that I hadn’t hunted in two years but had been successful there in the past. It was uneventful for the afternoon hunt and I was about to start packing up my gear for the paddle out in my pirogue.
It was dead quiet and I figured I’d hear anything coming from a ways off, when I heard rustling in the leaves 30 yards behind me, I figured it would be a raccoon or opossum coming out it’s hole. I turned my head and to my amazement it was a big doe! I could tell though only 30 yards away that on her current course that I wouldn’t get a shot so I just sat and watched. Then I caught a glimpse of a second deer following. No it wasn’t a big buck as I hoped but her yearling. I was sure it would follow the same path but it turned my way. I hurried to my feet and grabbed my bow from the hanger, readied myself for a possible shot opportunity. It came in to 14 yards and stopped broadside.
Now I’ve been a loyal Magnus Stinger guy for years. But lack of good blood trails easy to follow and my old eyes making it harder to find these days, I decided to try something different. On one of my out of state trips, my friend from Stickbow Supplies Travis Snider shot a deer with a VPA 3 blade 1-1/8” head and the blood trail was spectacular!
So I ordered a 3 pack but didn’t realize that the 1-1/4” were not the 3 to 1 ratio longer head. But since I had them I figured I’d give them a try.
As the yearling stood there I came to anchor, held a second or two to confirm I was holding perfectly for a deadly shot.
The arrow was away before I could blink and was sticking up in the ground as the deer flew outta there quickly!
The big doe started blowing instantly and I listened as the deer ran only 35 yards and crashed. I thanked God for another opportunity and a quick clean kill. Waited about 15 minutes and started packing up.
Once on the ground I inspected my arrow and it was coated from end to end and blood spray was instant. A short and very easy to follow blood trail and I was standing over my hard won prize. I will definitely be trying these heads out on some hogs this summer. God Bless Everyone!

Corey

Looks like a good eater.  Congratulations, and nice shooting!

Congrats.  I've only shot one with a VPA 3 blade, but the blood trail was excellent.  Great heads.

Awesome Corey! I shoot the VPA 200s in the wider and the others. Mostly the 1 1/8" because I like the longer profile , but shot a decent buck a couple years back with the 1 1/4 and went thru him like butter and stuck in the ground with 46# so I have good confidence in both.
Stay sharp, Kenny.
